Vegetable garden mulch takeoff

Compost or leaf mold mulch is a common choice for vegetable beds — unlike bark mulch, it breaks down quickly and actively enriches the soil rather than tying up nitrogen as it decomposes.

This page defaults to a 100 sq ft bed at 2 in deep — edit the inputs above to match your actual garden size. Bale-sold straw mulch isn't included here since it's sold by coverage area rather than volume.

Mulch Calculator Formula: How Is It Determined?

Bed area and depth combine into a bare volume, a settling/waste allowance is added, then the order volume converts to either a bag count or a bulk quantity.

Step 1 — Bed Area

By Dimensions: Area = Length x Width

By Total Area: Area = entered value (converted to sq ft if entered in m²)

Either enter a rectangular bed's length and width, or enter its total area directly — useful for an irregular bed or a tree ring where length x width doesn't apply.

Step 2 — Bare & Order Volume

Bare Volume = Area x Depth

Order Volume = Bare Volume x (1 + 10% settling/waste)

The 10% allowance covers typical first-season settling of organic mulch plus spillage during spreading, matching similar allowances used across the site's other coverage calculators.

Step 3a — Bagged

Bags = ceil(Order Volume / Bag Volume)

Bag volume is stored as a canonical liter figure internally, so both cu-ft-sized (US) and litre-sized (UK/AU) bags come from the same preset list, or enter a custom bag size in either unit.

Step 3b — Bulk / Loose

Order Volume shown directly in cu yd and m³

Bulk Bags (≈1 m³ each) = ceil(Order Volume in m³)

Bulk mulch is most often bought loose by the cubic yard (common in the US) — the bulk/FIBC (~1 m³) bag count is shown as an additional reference figure, since that's a common bulk-bag size in the UK and Australia.

Worked Example

This example walks through your current inputs above, using the same steps as the Formula section.

Input Values Used

InputValueWhy it is used
Bed Area100 sq ft (9.29 m²)Sets bare volume
Depth2 in (5.1 cm) — Compost / Leaf Mold MulchSets bare volume and depth-advisory check
Delivery MethodBaggedSets bag count or bulk quantity

Step 1 & 2 — Volume

CalculationResult
Bare Volume = 100 sq ft x (2/12) ft16.67 cu ft (0.617 cu yd / 0.472 m³)
Order Volume = Bare Volume x (1 + 10%)18.33 cu ft (0.679 cu yd / 0.519 m³)

Step 3 — Bags

CalculationResult
Bags = ceil(18.33 / 2 cu ft per bag)10 bags

Therefore, a 100 sq ft bed at 2" deep needs approximately 10 bags of compost / leaf mold mulch.

FAQ

It's generally avoided directly in planting rows — bark mulch ties up soil nitrogen as it slowly breaks down, and is better suited to ornamental beds. Compost, leaf mold, or straw are the more common vegetable-garden choices.
Compost and leaf mold mulch break down fastest of any type — often needing a refresh every season as part of normal bed preparation, rather than lasting multiple years like bark mulch.
