Inputs

Enter Bed Size

ℹ️Total planting bed or border area to be mulched.

ℹ️This calculator's general recommended-depth range doesn't apply on this page — see the depth guidance below the result card.

ℹ️Coarser and more loosely packed than shredded bark, so it takes a bit more depth to suppress weeds equally well. Often available free or low-cost from local tree services.

Delivery

Delivery Method

ℹ️2 cu ft is the standard US retail bag; 50-75 L covers common UK/AU/EU bag sizes.

Playground fall-height safety surfacing depth is NOT the same as this calculator's general decorative-bed guidance for the selected mulch type — disregard that comparison here. The CPSC Public Playground Safety Handbook sets a compressed-fill depth per material and per equipment critical/fall height (commonly cited example figures: around 9 in compressed for wood mulch/chips, with up to 12 in of initial fill recommended since wood material compresses over time; shredded/recycled rubber can achieve a comparable protection rating at a shallower compressed depth, often cited around 6 in, for a given critical height). Always confirm the exact required depth for your equipment's actual fall height from the current CPSC handbook's own table and your product's certified ASTM F1292 impact-attenuation test data — not from a single blanket number.

Playground safety surfacing mulch volume

Playground fall-height safety surfacing follows a completely different standard than the general decorative-bed depth guidance this calculator otherwise shows — the required compressed depth depends on both the material (wood mulch/chips vs. shredded or recycled rubber behave differently) and the highest fall height of the equipment being protected, per the CPSC Public Playground Safety Handbook's own loose-fill material tables.

This page defaults to a 200 sq ft area of wood chips at 9 in deep as a commonly-cited illustrative starting point only — it is not a substitute for looking up your specific equipment's critical height in the current CPSC handbook, or for the product's own certified ASTM F1292 impact-attenuation test data. This calculator computes material volume only; it does not perform or replace a playground safety surfacing design.

Mulch Calculator Formula: How Is It Determined?

Bed area and depth combine into a bare volume, a settling/waste allowance is added, then the order volume converts to either a bag count or a bulk quantity.

Step 1 — Bed Area

By Dimensions: Area = Length x Width

By Total Area: Area = entered value (converted to sq ft if entered in m²)

Either enter a rectangular bed's length and width, or enter its total area directly — useful for an irregular bed or a tree ring where length x width doesn't apply.

Step 2 — Bare & Order Volume

Bare Volume = Area x Depth

Order Volume = Bare Volume x (1 + 10% settling/waste)

The 10% allowance covers typical first-season settling of organic mulch plus spillage during spreading, matching similar allowances used across the site's other coverage calculators.

Step 3a — Bagged

Bags = ceil(Order Volume / Bag Volume)

Bag volume is stored as a canonical liter figure internally, so both cu-ft-sized (US) and litre-sized (UK/AU) bags come from the same preset list, or enter a custom bag size in either unit.

Step 3b — Bulk / Loose

Order Volume shown directly in cu yd and m³

Bulk Bags (≈1 m³ each) = ceil(Order Volume in m³)

Bulk mulch is most often bought loose by the cubic yard (common in the US) — the bulk/FIBC (~1 m³) bag count is shown as an additional reference figure, since that's a common bulk-bag size in the UK and Australia.

Worked Example

This example walks through your current inputs above, using the same steps as the Formula section.

Input Values Used

InputValueWhy it is used
Bed Area200 sq ft (18.58 m²)Sets bare volume
Depth9 in (22.9 cm) — Wood Chips (Arborist Chips)Sets bare volume and depth-advisory check
Delivery MethodBaggedSets bag count or bulk quantity

Step 1 & 2 — Volume

CalculationResult
Bare Volume = 200 sq ft x (9/12) ft150 cu ft (5.556 cu yd / 4.248 m³)
Order Volume = Bare Volume x (1 + 10%)165 cu ft (6.111 cu yd / 4.672 m³)

Step 3 — Bags

CalculationResult
Bags = ceil(165 / 2 cu ft per bag)83 bags

Therefore, a 200 sq ft bed at 9" deep needs approximately 83 bags of wood chips (arborist chips).

FAQ

It depends on both the material and your equipment's fall height, per the CPSC Public Playground Safety Handbook's loose-fill tables — wood mulch/chips commonly need around 9 in compressed depth (with up to 12 in of initial fill recommended, since wood material compresses over time), while shredded or recycled rubber can often achieve a comparable protection rating at a shallower compressed depth, commonly cited around 6 in. Always confirm the exact figure for your equipment's actual fall height from the current CPSC table, not a single blanket number.
This calculator's built-in recommended-depth note (shown on every other page) is written for decorative garden and landscape mulch, not playground fall-height safety surfacing — showing that garden-bed comparison here would be actively misleading, so this page replaces it with playground-specific guidance instead.
