Flower Bed Mulch Calculator (Bags or Bulk)

Size mulch for your flower bed or border instantly.

Inputs

Enter Bed Size

ℹ️For an irregular bed, measure its overall rectangular footprint, or switch to By Total Area above.

ℹ️Recommended for Double-Ground Hardwood Mulch: 2-3 in.

ℹ️A finer, more uniform grind than single-ground bark — settles into a denser mat, good for formal beds, but can compact and shed water if applied too deep.

Delivery

Delivery Method

ℹ️2 cu ft is the standard US retail bag; 50-75 L covers common UK/AU/EU bag sizes.

Flower bed and border mulch takeoff

A typical flower bed or border is mulched 2-3 inches deep with a fine-textured mulch like double-ground hardwood, which settles into a neat, uniform-looking layer around ornamental plantings.

This page defaults to a 10 ft × 5 ft bed at 2 in deep — edit the inputs above to match your actual bed size and preferred mulch type.

Mulch Calculator Formula: How Is It Determined?

Bed area and depth combine into a bare volume, a settling/waste allowance is added, then the order volume converts to either a bag count or a bulk quantity.

Step 1 — Bed Area

By Dimensions: Area = Length x Width

By Total Area: Area = entered value (converted to sq ft if entered in m²)

Either enter a rectangular bed's length and width, or enter its total area directly — useful for an irregular bed or a tree ring where length x width doesn't apply.

Step 2 — Bare & Order Volume

Bare Volume = Area x Depth

Order Volume = Bare Volume x (1 + 10% settling/waste)

The 10% allowance covers typical first-season settling of organic mulch plus spillage during spreading, matching similar allowances used across the site's other coverage calculators.

Step 3a — Bagged

Bags = ceil(Order Volume / Bag Volume)

Bag volume is stored as a canonical liter figure internally, so both cu-ft-sized (US) and litre-sized (UK/AU) bags come from the same preset list, or enter a custom bag size in either unit.

Step 3b — Bulk / Loose

Order Volume shown directly in cu yd and m³

Bulk Bags (≈1 m³ each) = ceil(Order Volume in m³)

Bulk mulch is most often bought loose by the cubic yard (common in the US) — the bulk/FIBC (~1 m³) bag count is shown as an additional reference figure, since that's a common bulk-bag size in the UK and Australia.

Worked Example

This example walks through your current inputs above, using the same steps as the Formula section.

Step 1 & 2 — Volume

Therefore, a 50 sq ft bed at 2" deep needs approximately 5 bags of double-ground hardwood mulch.

FAQ

2-3 inches is typical for a fine-textured mulch like double-ground hardwood — deep enough for weed suppression without smothering shallow-rooted annuals and perennials.
It depends on your chosen depth and bag size — a 50 sq ft bed at 2 in deep needs roughly 9-10 standard 2 cu ft bags once the settling/waste allowance is included. Enter your actual bed size above for a precise figure.
