Tree Ring Mulch Calculator (Mulch Ring Around a Tree)

Size mulch for a tree ring instantly.

Inputs

Enter Bed Size

ℹ️Total planting bed or border area to be mulched.

ℹ️Recommended for Wood Chips (Arborist Chips): 3-4 in.

ℹ️Coarser and more loosely packed than shredded bark, so it takes a bit more depth to suppress weeds equally well. Often available free or low-cost from local tree services.

Delivery

Delivery Method

ℹ️2 cu ft is the standard US retail bag; 50-75 L covers common UK/AU/EU bag sizes.

Cost

Mulch Needed

6 bags

11 cu ft total (0.311 m³)

Bed Area

40 sq ft

3.72 m² at 3" (7.6 cm) deep

Volume

Bare volume: 10 cu ft (0.37 cu yd / 0.283 m³)

Order volume (+10% settling/waste): 11 cu ft

0.407 cu yd / 0.311 m³ / 311.5 L

Bags

Bag size: 2 cu ft (56.6 L)

Bags needed: 6

Each bag covers ≈8 sq ft at 3" deep.

Wood Chips (Arborist Chips)

Coarser and more loosely packed than shredded bark, so it takes a bit more depth to suppress weeds equally well. Often available free or low-cost from local tree services.

Recommended depth: 3-4 in

3 in is shallower than the 3-4 in recommended for Wood Chips (Arborist Chips) — weed suppression may be reduced.

Tree ring / mulch donut takeoff

A tree ring (or "mulch donut") is a circular or oval mulched area around a tree's base — since it isn't a simple rectangle, this page defaults to By Total Area entry rather than length x width.

This page defaults to a 40 sq ft ring at 3 in deep with wood chips, a common choice for tree rings — edit the inputs above to match your actual ring size.

Mulch Calculator Formula: How Is It Determined?

Bed area and depth combine into a bare volume, a settling/waste allowance is added, then the order volume converts to either a bag count or a bulk quantity.

Step 1 — Bed Area

By Dimensions: Area = Length x Width

By Total Area: Area = entered value (converted to sq ft if entered in m²)

Either enter a rectangular bed's length and width, or enter its total area directly — useful for an irregular bed or a tree ring where length x width doesn't apply.

Step 2 — Bare & Order Volume

Bare Volume = Area x Depth

Order Volume = Bare Volume x (1 + 10% settling/waste)

The 10% allowance covers typical first-season settling of organic mulch plus spillage during spreading, matching similar allowances used across the site's other coverage calculators.

Step 3a — Bagged

Bags = ceil(Order Volume / Bag Volume)

Bag volume is stored as a canonical liter figure internally, so both cu-ft-sized (US) and litre-sized (UK/AU) bags come from the same preset list, or enter a custom bag size in either unit.

Step 3b — Bulk / Loose

Order Volume shown directly in cu yd and m³

Bulk Bags (≈1 m³ each) = ceil(Order Volume in m³)

Bulk mulch is most often bought loose by the cubic yard (common in the US) — the bulk/FIBC (~1 m³) bag count is shown as an additional reference figure, since that's a common bulk-bag size in the UK and Australia.

Worked Example

This example walks through your current inputs above, using the same steps as the Formula section.

Input Values Used

InputValueWhy it is used
Bed Area40 sq ft (3.72 m²)Sets bare volume
Depth3 in (7.6 cm) — Wood Chips (Arborist Chips)Sets bare volume and depth-advisory check
Delivery MethodBaggedSets bag count or bulk quantity

Step 1 & 2 — Volume

CalculationResult
Bare Volume = 40 sq ft x (3/12) ft10 cu ft (0.37 cu yd / 0.283 m³)
Order Volume = Bare Volume x (1 + 10%)11 cu ft (0.407 cu yd / 0.311 m³)

Step 3 — Bags

CalculationResult
Bags = ceil(11 / 2 cu ft per bag)6 bags

Therefore, a 40 sq ft bed at 3" deep needs approximately 6 bags of wood chips (arborist chips).

FAQ

For a roughly circular ring, area ≈ π × radius². For example, a 6 ft radius ring is about π × 6² ≈ 113 sq ft. Enter that total under By Total Area above.
Keep a gap of at least 3-6 inches from the trunk itself — this is the classic "mulch volcano" mistake to avoid, since mulch piled directly against bark traps moisture and invites rot and pests.
