Inputs

Enter Bed Size

ℹ️For an irregular bed, measure its overall rectangular footprint, or switch to By Total Area above.

ℹ️Recommended for Shredded Hardwood Bark (Natural): 2-4 in.

ℹ️The most common general-purpose mulch. Shreds interlock and resist washing away on mild slopes; breaks down over 1-2 years, enriching the soil as it does.

Delivery

Delivery Method

ℹ️2 cu ft is the standard US retail bag; 50-75 L covers common UK/AU/EU bag sizes.

Exact mulch bag count

Buying too few bags means a second trip; buying too many wastes money on material you didn't need — this page defaults to the standard 2 cu ft US retail bag size and Bagged delivery.

This page defaults to a 15 ft × 8 ft bed at 3 in deep — edit the inputs and bag size above to match your actual project and local bag sizes.

Mulch Calculator Formula: How Is It Determined?

Bed area and depth combine into a bare volume, a settling/waste allowance is added, then the order volume converts to either a bag count or a bulk quantity.

Step 1 — Bed Area

By Dimensions: Area = Length x Width

By Total Area: Area = entered value (converted to sq ft if entered in m²)

Either enter a rectangular bed's length and width, or enter its total area directly — useful for an irregular bed or a tree ring where length x width doesn't apply.

Step 2 — Bare & Order Volume

Bare Volume = Area x Depth

Order Volume = Bare Volume x (1 + 10% settling/waste)

The 10% allowance covers typical first-season settling of organic mulch plus spillage during spreading, matching similar allowances used across the site's other coverage calculators.

Step 3a — Bagged

Bags = ceil(Order Volume / Bag Volume)

Bag volume is stored as a canonical liter figure internally, so both cu-ft-sized (US) and litre-sized (UK/AU) bags come from the same preset list, or enter a custom bag size in either unit.

Step 3b — Bulk / Loose

Order Volume shown directly in cu yd and m³

Bulk Bags (≈1 m³ each) = ceil(Order Volume in m³)

Bulk mulch is most often bought loose by the cubic yard (common in the US) — the bulk/FIBC (~1 m³) bag count is shown as an additional reference figure, since that's a common bulk-bag size in the UK and Australia.

Worked Example

This example walks through your current inputs above, using the same steps as the Formula section.

Delivery MethodBaggedSets bag count or bulk quantity

Step 1 & 2 — Volume

CalculationResult

Step 3 — Bags

Therefore, a 120 sq ft bed at 3" deep needs approximately 17 bags of shredded hardwood bark (natural).

FAQ

It depends on your depth and bag size — at 3 inches deep with standard 2 cu ft bags, 120 sq ft needs roughly 17 bags including the settling/waste allowance. Enter your exact area above for a precise count.
Always round up — this calculator already rounds every bag count up to the next whole bag, since a partial bag still means buying the full bag.
