What Is a Timber / Lumber Calculator?

Lumber is sold under a nominal name — a "2x4" — but its actual dressed size after milling is smaller. Physical volume and weight should use the actual dressed size, while board-foot billing is commonly quoted from the nominal trade size unless your supplier prices from actual dimensions. This calculator converts piece size, length, and either a direct quantity or a run length and on-center spacing into the number of pieces to order, total board feet, metric volume, and cost.

It works for wall studs, floor and roof joists, roof purlins, and formwork/shuttering timber alike — any application built from repeated same-size pieces. Enter a standard nominal size or a fully custom actual dimension, then choose whether standard-size board feet should follow nominal trade billing or actual dressed-size billing.

What makes this calculator different:

Most online lumber calculators ask for a single volume figure or work only in board feet, U.S. nominal sizes, and imperial units. This one keeps the billing and physical dimensions separate, supports both a direct piece-count entry and a run-length-plus-spacing calculation using the standard "run ÷ spacing, rounded up, plus one" framing convention, and reports results in board feet and metric volume together — so it works equally well for a U.S. framing takeoff and a metric-region purlin or joist order.

US softwood dimension lumber is traditionally billed by nominal size (Product Standard PS 20) even though the physically delivered board is smaller — a nominal 2x4 x 8 ft bills as 5.33 board feet, not the 3.5 board feet its actual 1½ x 3½ in cross-section would give. This calculator defaults to nominal billing to match most supplier invoices, with actual dimensions available as an option. Metric volume always uses actual dimensions either way, since that reflects the true physical material.
