Ridge vent length is the exhaust NFA (40% of total required NFA) divided by the vent's rated NFA per linear foot, rounded UP to the next tenth of a foot since this is a minimum requirement — a continuous, linear-footage calculation, unlike gable or box vents which are sized by unit count.

This page defaults to a larger 2,000 sq ft attic in cold Climate Zone 6, WITH a Class I/II vapor retarder installed and vent placement confirmed — meeting both conditions IRC R806.2's exception requires in Zone 6 — demonstrating the relaxed 1:300 ratio.

Attic Ventilation Calculator Formula: How Is It Determined?

Total required Net Free Area (NFA) is determined by attic floor area and the applicable ratio, then split between intake and exhaust, then converted into either continuous vent length (soffit/ridge) or individual vent count (gable/box/turbine).

Step 1 — 1:300 Exception Eligibility

Zone needs vapor retarder = Climate Zone is 6, 7, or 8

Qualifies for 1:300 = Vent Placement Confirmed AND (Zone does NOT need vapor retarder OR Vapor Retarder Installed)

Ratio = 1:300 if qualifies, else 1:150 (IRC R806.2 general rule)

IRC R806.2's 1:300 exception requires BOTH conditions: in Climate Zones 6, 7, and 8 ONLY, a Class I or II vapor retarder on the ceiling's warm side (outside those zones the code doesn't condition the exception on a vapor retarder at all); and, in every zone, 40-50% of NFA sited within 3 ft of the ridge/highest point with the balance in the bottom third of the attic — a physical placement condition you confirm directly, since this calculator can't verify actual vent siting.

Step 2 — Required NFA

Required NFA (sq in) = (Attic Area sq ft / Ratio) x 144

The applicable ratio from Step 1 converts attic floor area into the total Net Free Area required, in square inches.

Step 3 — Intake / Exhaust Split

Intake (Soffit) NFA = Required NFA x 60%

Exhaust NFA = Required NFA x 40%

Code minimum is a straight 50/50 split. This calculator defaults to the commonly-recommended 60/40 intake-heavy split instead — the extra intake creates slight positive attic pressure, which reduces wind-driven rain/snow intrusion through a ridge vent. 40% exhaust also sits at the lower bound of the 1:300 exception's required 40-50% upper-vent range.

Step 4 — Vent Sizing

Soffit Linear Feet = ceil-to-tenth(Intake NFA / Soffit Vent NFA per Linear Foot)

Ridge Linear Feet = ceil-to-tenth(Exhaust NFA / Ridge Vent NFA per Linear Foot)

OR Vent Count = ceil(Exhaust NFA / NFA per Gable-Box-Turbine Vent)

Continuous vents (soffit, ridge) are sized by dividing the required NFA by the product's rated NFA per linear foot, rounded UP to the next tenth of a foot — these are minimum lengths, so rounding to-nearest could round a length below what's actually required. Individual vents (gable, box, turbine) are sized by dividing by the product's rated NFA per unit and rounding UP to a whole vent — a fractional vent isn't purchasable, and rounding down would under-ventilate.
