Attic Ventilation Calculator (Soffit & Ridge Vent Sizing)

Size your attic's ventilation instantly.

Inputs

sq ft

ℹ️Total floor area of the attic space, not the home's conditioned square footage.

ℹ️IECC climate zone — determines whether a vapor retarder is one of the conditions for the reduced 1:300 ratio (only required in Zones 6-8).

Vent Placement Meets Exception Requirements?

ℹ️Required for the reduced 1:300 ratio in every zone: 40-50% of NFA from vents within 3 ft of the ridge/highest point, with the rest in the bottom third of the attic. This is a physical siting condition this calculator can't verify for you — confirm it matches your actual (or planned) vent layout.

sq in/ft

ℹ️Net Free Area per linear foot, stamped on your continuous soffit vent product — 9 sq in/ft is a common default, but check your actual product.

ℹ️Ridge vents are sized continuously by linear foot; gable/box/turbine vents are sized individually by unit count.

sq in/ft

ℹ️Net Free Area per linear foot, stamped on your ridge vent product — 18 sq in/ft is a commonly-cited default, but check your actual product.

Soffit (Intake) Vent Needed

76.8 ft

Total continuous linear feet, split across all eaves

Ridge (Exhaust) Vent Needed

25.6 ft

Continuous ridge vent length

Attic ventilation sizing

Total required Net Free Area (NFA) is your attic floor area ÷ 150 (or ÷ 300 if you qualify for IRC R806.2's exception), split 60% intake / 40% exhaust, then converted into soffit and ridge vent linear footage using each product's rated NFA per foot.

This page defaults to a 1,200 sq ft attic in Zone 4 with the 1:300 exception not yet confirmed (1:150 ratio) and a ridge vent — edit the inputs above to match your actual attic.

Attic Ventilation Calculator Formula: How Is It Determined?

Total required Net Free Area (NFA) is determined by attic floor area and the applicable ratio, then split between intake and exhaust, then converted into either continuous vent length (soffit/ridge) or individual vent count (gable/box/turbine).

Step 1 — 1:300 Exception Eligibility

Zone needs vapor retarder = Climate Zone is 6, 7, or 8

Qualifies for 1:300 = Vent Placement Confirmed AND (Zone does NOT need vapor retarder OR Vapor Retarder Installed)

Ratio = 1:300 if qualifies, else 1:150 (IRC R806.2 general rule)

IRC R806.2's 1:300 exception requires BOTH conditions: in Climate Zones 6, 7, and 8 ONLY, a Class I or II vapor retarder on the ceiling's warm side (outside those zones the code doesn't condition the exception on a vapor retarder at all); and, in every zone, 40-50% of NFA sited within 3 ft of the ridge/highest point with the balance in the bottom third of the attic — a physical placement condition you confirm directly, since this calculator can't verify actual vent siting.

Step 2 — Required NFA

Required NFA (sq in) = (Attic Area sq ft / Ratio) x 144

The applicable ratio from Step 1 converts attic floor area into the total Net Free Area required, in square inches.

Step 3 — Intake / Exhaust Split

Intake (Soffit) NFA = Required NFA x 60%

Exhaust NFA = Required NFA x 40%

Code minimum is a straight 50/50 split. This calculator defaults to the commonly-recommended 60/40 intake-heavy split instead — the extra intake creates slight positive attic pressure, which reduces wind-driven rain/snow intrusion through a ridge vent. 40% exhaust also sits at the lower bound of the 1:300 exception's required 40-50% upper-vent range.

Step 4 — Vent Sizing

Soffit Linear Feet = ceil-to-tenth(Intake NFA / Soffit Vent NFA per Linear Foot)

Ridge Linear Feet = ceil-to-tenth(Exhaust NFA / Ridge Vent NFA per Linear Foot)

OR Vent Count = ceil(Exhaust NFA / NFA per Gable-Box-Turbine Vent)

Continuous vents (soffit, ridge) are sized by dividing the required NFA by the product's rated NFA per linear foot, rounded UP to the next tenth of a foot — these are minimum lengths, so rounding to-nearest could round a length below what's actually required. Individual vents (gable, box, turbine) are sized by dividing by the product's rated NFA per unit and rounding UP to a whole vent — a fractional vent isn't purchasable, and rounding down would under-ventilate.

Worked Example

This example walks through your current inputs above, using the same steps as the Formula section.

Step 1 — 1:300 Exception Eligibility

CalculationResult
Zone needs vapor retarderNo (Zone 1-5)
Qualifies for 1:300No
Ratio applied1:150

Step 2 — Required NFA

CalculationResult
Required NFA = (1,200 / 150) x 1441,152 sq in

Step 3 — Intake / Exhaust Split

CalculationResult
Intake (soffit) = 1,152 x 60%691.2 sq in
Exhaust = 1,152 x 40%460.8 sq in

Step 4 — Vent Sizing

CalculationResult
Soffit vent = 691.2 / 9 sq in/ft76.8 ft
Ridge vent = 460.8 / 18 sq in/ft25.6 ft

Therefore, a 1,200 sq ft attic needs approximately 76.8 ft of soffit vent and approximately 25.6 ft of ridge vent. Verify your chosen vent products' actual rated NFA before purchasing.

FAQ

At the standard 1:150 ratio, required NFA = (1200/150) x 144 = 1,152 sq in. At the default 60/40 split and 9 sq in/ft soffit / 18 sq in/ft ridge rates, that's 76.8 ft of soffit vent and 25.6 ft of ridge vent.
No — it's specifically the attic's own floor area, which is often smaller than the home's total conditioned square footage, especially in multi-story homes where the attic only sits above the top floor.
