NFA is the actual unobstructed open area a vent provides — smaller than its physical size, since screens and louvers block some airflow. Required total NFA = attic floor area ÷ 150, or ÷ 300 if you qualify for IRC R806.2's exception (balanced vent placement in every zone, plus a vapor retarder ONLY in Climate Zones 6-8) — converted from sq ft to sq in by multiplying by 144.
This page defaults to an 800 sq ft attic in Zone 3 (Warm) with placement confirmed — no vapor retarder is needed to qualify for 1:300 here, since Zone 3 is outside the 6-8 range the vapor-retarder condition applies to.
Attic Ventilation Calculator Formula: How Is It Determined?
Total required Net Free Area (NFA) is determined by attic floor area and the applicable ratio, then split between intake and exhaust, then converted into either continuous vent length (soffit/ridge) or individual vent count (gable/box/turbine).
Step 1 — 1:300 Exception Eligibility

Individual vents (gable, box, turbine) are sized by dividing by the product's rated NFA per unit and rounding UP to a whole vent — a fractional vent isn't purchasable, and rounding down would under-ventilate.
