Fiber Cement Lap Siding Verification Checklist
π Last updated: November 5, 2026
Essential Checklist+β
Complete these critical checks before approving the work or proceeding to the next construction stage.
β14 Inspection Points
β4 Verification Categories
βMeasurement & Takeoff+-
- Every wall section's width and height were measured on site, not estimated from a floor plan alone.
- Window and door counts and typical sizes were recorded for each wall section that has openings, not assumed uniform across the whole house.
- Outside and inside corner counts match the building's actual footprint, including any bump-outs, bay windows, or wing additions.
- Overall wall height (corner boards and inside-corner sealant only) reflects the tallest point they must run, e.g. full two-story height where applicable β this is separate from each wall section's own height above, which drives that wall's own course count and butt-joint flashing.
βBoard Selection & Overlap+-
- Board width selected matches the actual product ordered (5.25 in through 12 in, or Custom) β not assumed from a generic default.
- Overlap entered matches the installer's actual planned overlap (James Hardie's published minimum is 1-1/4 in) β this directly sets the derived reveal and course count.
- Finish type (ColorPlus factory-finished vs. Primed field-paint) matches the actual product ordered, since this changes whether a paint quantity is needed.
- Board, starter strip, trim, frieze, and corner board stock length were confirmed against the actual supplier SKU, since this calculator's 12 ft assumption may not match every manufacturer.
βTrim, Corners & Joint Treatment+-
- Starter strip is planned around the full base perimeter of every wall section being sided, level and straight before the first course goes up.
- Trim (casing) boards are planned around every window and door opening (3-sided for doors, 4-sided for windows), plus any gable rake or other termination not covered by frieze trim.
- Outside corners use full-height corner boards on both faces; inside corners are butted and caulked rather than boarded, matching standard fiber cement practice.
- Horizontal butt joints are backed with a concealed flashing strip, NOT caulked, per James Hardie's own best-practice guidance.
βInstallation & Final Check+-
- Boards are cut using shears or a dust-controlled saw with a HEPA vacuum attachment β never a dry abrasive cut β per OSHA silica dust exposure requirements for fiber cement.
- Board, trim, corner, flashing, and fastener quantities including the waste allowance β not the raw calculated totals β were used for the material order.

- Gable end walls were added as their own row with a reasonable average height, or their triangular area was measured and compared separately.
βBoard Selection & Overlap+-
- Board width selected matches the actual product ordered (5.25 in through 12 in, or Custom) β not assumed from a generic default.
- Overlap entered matches the installer's actual planned overlap (James Hardie's published minimum is 1-1/4 in) β this directly sets the derived reveal and course count.

- Waste allowance (5-15%) matches the job's actual complexity β more openings, cuts, and gables need a higher allowance.
βTrim, Corners & Joint Treatment+-
- Starter strip is planned around the full base perimeter of every wall section being sided, level and straight before the first course goes up.
- Trim (casing) boards are planned around every window and door opening (3-sided for doors, 4-sided for windows), plus any gable rake or other termination not covered by frieze trim.

- Horizontal butt joints are backed with a concealed flashing strip, NOT caulked, per James Hardie's own best-practice guidance.
- Fastener spacing (16 in studs, 24 in max, or 12 in high-wind) matches the local code/wind-load requirement for this job, not just this calculator's default.
- Frieze/soffit transition trim is included only where the top of the wall actually terminates under a soffit/fascia using that detail β not assumed for every elevation.
βInstallation & Final Check+-
- Boards are cut using shears or a dust-controlled saw with a HEPA vacuum attachment β never a dry abrasive cut β per OSHA silica dust exposure requirements for fiber cement.
- Board, trim, corner, flashing, and fastener quantities including the waste allowance β not the raw calculated totals β were used for the material order.
- Estimated installed weight was checked against the crew's lift/scaffold capacity and delivery truck/freight planning before ordering.
- Housewrap/weather-resistant barrier condition was confirmed intact and properly lapped before siding installation began.
- Course lines were checked level and consistent across adjacent wall elevations with a level or story pole before continuing past the first few courses, not assumed self-correcting further up the wall.
- If Primed finish was selected, field paint was applied in 2 full coats before/shortly after installation per the manufacturer's finishing requirements.
- Final elevation was checked for level courses, consistent reveal, and properly seated corner boards and trim before calling the job complete.
