Excavation Calculation FAQ

Rectangular excavation is used for flat areas with vertical sides, pit excavation is used for sloped excavations like foundation pits, and trench excavation is used for long and narrow works such as pipelines and drainage.
Use rectangular excavation for general area work, pit excavation for sloped sides, trench excavation for linear works like pipelines and cables, and backfill calculation after the structure is placed.
Excavation volume is generally calculated as Length Γ— Width Γ— Depth. For sloped excavation, the frustum formula is used to account for different top and bottom dimensions.
Swell factor represents the increase in soil volume after excavation due to loosening. Backfill uses a compaction allowance instead, because placed soil reduces in volume during compaction.
