Brick/Stone Veneer Verification Checklist
π Last updated: November 7, 2026
Essential Checklist+β
Complete these critical checks before approving the work or proceeding to the next construction stage.
β15 Inspection Points
β4 Verification Categories
βMeasurement & Takeoff+-
- Every wall section's width and height were measured on site, not estimated from a floor plan alone.
- Window and door counts and typical sizes were recorded for each wall section that has openings, not assumed uniform across the whole house.
- Outside corner count matches the building's actual footprint, including any bump-outs, bay windows, or wing additions.
- Overall wall height (corner linear footage sizing only) reflects the tallest point a corner run must cover, e.g. full two-story height where applicable.
- Veneer type (Thin Brick vs. Manufactured Stone) matches the actual product ordered, not just this calculator's default.
βSubstrate, Corners & Joint Style+-
- Substrate type (Frame + Lath vs. Direct-to-Masonry) matches the actual wall construction β this changes whether lath, scratch coat, fasteners, and weep screed are needed at all.
- Joint style (grouted vs. dry-stack/tight-fit) matches the actual product and design intent, since it determines whether grout bags are ordered at all.
βWeight, Flashing & Drainage+-
- Entered unit weight (lb/sq ft) matches the actual product's published saturated weight, not left at this calculator's generic default.
- If the entered unit weight exceeds the commonly cited 15 lb/sq ft lightweight threshold, the supporting wall's total weight was checked against IRC R301.2.2.2 (or the local equivalent) with a design professional.
- A weather-resistive barrier is planned behind the lath on every Frame + Lath wall before veneer installation begins.
- A weep screed is planned at the base of every Frame + Lath wall, sitting at least 4 in above grade (2 in above hardscape), with veneer never extending below it.
- Flashing is planned above window and door openings and at any roof-to-wall or deck-to-wall intersections, per the local code and product installation guide.
βInstallation & Final Check+-
- Metal lath (if Frame + Lath) is self-furring/furred off the wall and meets the local code's minimum weight/gauge standard for the span.
- Scratch coat (if Frame + Lath) is applied with enough pressure to fully encase the lath and is scored/raked before it sets.
- Setting mortar achieves full, void-free coverage behind every unit β not a perimeter, donut, or spot method, which does not meet manufacturer installation guides.

- Flat box coverage, corner box coverage, and unit weight were confirmed against the actual product's data sheet, not left at this calculator's generic defaults, before placing a material order.
βSubstrate, Corners & Joint Style+-
- Substrate type (Frame + Lath vs. Direct-to-Masonry) matches the actual wall construction β this changes whether lath, scratch coat, fasteners, and weep screed are needed at all.
- Framing spacing (if Frame + Lath) matches the actual stud/joist layout, not just this calculator's default.
- Corner deduction factor was checked against the chosen manufacturer's own installation guide rather than left at this calculator's 0.75 sq ft/linear ft default.
- Joint style (grouted vs. dry-stack/tight-fit) matches the actual product and design intent, since it determines whether grout bags are ordered at all.
- Waste allowance (5-15%) matches the job's actual complexity β more openings and cuts need a higher allowance.
- Outside temperature and weather forecast were checked against the mortar/grout product's minimum/maximum application temperature range before scheduling work.
βWeight, Flashing & Drainage+-
- Entered unit weight (lb/sq ft) matches the actual product's published saturated weight, not left at this calculator's generic default.
- If the entered unit weight exceeds the commonly cited 15 lb/sq ft lightweight threshold, the supporting wall's total weight was checked against IRC R301.2.2.2 (or the local equivalent) with a design professional.

- Flashing is planned above window and door openings and at any roof-to-wall or deck-to-wall intersections, per the local code and product installation guide.
- Control/expansion joints are planned per the product manufacturer's spacing guidance on long wall runs β not assumed unnecessary just because this calculator does not compute them.
βInstallation & Final Check+-
- Metal lath (if Frame + Lath) is self-furring/furred off the wall and meets the local code's minimum weight/gauge standard for the span.
- Corner units are set first at every outside corner before flat units are cut in against them, per standard veneer installation sequencing.
- Adequate cure time was scheduled between the scratch coat, setting mortar, and any grout β this is a multi-day process, not a single-visit install.
- Box, bag, and accessory quantities including the waste allowance β not the raw calculated totals β were used for the material order.
