Wood & Engineered Wood Siding Calculator (Lap/Clapboard & Board and Batten Boards, Trim & Cost)
Calculate wood or engineered wood siding boards, trim, corner boards, and cost.
🕒 Last updated: November 5, 2026
Inputs
Section 1: Building & Corners
ℹ️Used to size corner boards and inside-corner sealant only — use the tallest point corner boards must cover. Each wall section's own height (below) drives that wall's own coursing/board run.
ℹ️A simple rectangular house has 4 outside corners. Each gets a full-height corner board on both faces, for either siding style.
ℹ️Inside corners are modeled as a caulked butt joint (no corner board), the common approach for both wood siding styles.
Section 2: Wall Sections
Wall Section 1
Windows on this wall
Doors on this wall
Every window and door entered here is fully deducted from this wall's siding order area, including a garage door or other large opening — the same convention independently verified for this site's Fiber Cement Lap Siding Calculator.
Each row is a separate wall elevation — up to 20 sections, combined into one total. Leave window/door counts at 0 for a blank wall.
Section 3: Material & Style
Natural wood (cedar, pine, redwood) is essentially never sold factory pre-colored — it ships Unfinished or back-primed only, and always needs a field paint or stain job.
Section 4: Board & Reveal
ℹ️Standard WRCLA nominal bevel/clapboard sizes. The visible reveal is derived below from dressed width minus overlap.
ℹ️The IRC's own minimum lap-siding course overlap is 1 in, matching WRCLA's and LP's published minimum for wood and engineered wood (lower than this site's Fiber Cement Calculator's 1.25 in HardiePlank-specific minimum).
Section 5: Fastening & Finish
ℹ️WRCLA's own instructions for wood bevel/lap siding cap fastener spacing at 24 in O.C., one nail per piece; confirm the required spacing for your local wind zone/code before finalizing.
Natural wood siding needs a full field paint or stain job (modeled here as 2 coats) before or shortly after installation, whether it ships Unfinished or back-primed only.
Section 6: Waste & Trim
ℹ️Applied to boards, starter strip, trim boards, frieze trim, and sealant. Corner boards and butt-joint flashing are not affected — each is a discrete count based on wall/corner geometry alone.
Section 7: Cost
Buy at least 29 board(s) of Natural Wood Nominal 1x8 (7.5 in dressed, ~6.5 in reveal) (Lap/Clapboard)
Covering 226 sq ft (21.0 m²) of siding order area across 1 wall section(s).

Quick Insight
Calculated across 1 wall section(s) as horizontal Lap/Clapboard siding: every window and door is FULLY deducted from gross wall area (same convention independently verified for this site's Fiber Cement Lap Siding Calculator), exposure is derived from your chosen board width minus overlap (a 1 in minimum here, not fiber cement's 1.25 in HardiePlank minimum), and outside corners use full-height corner boards while inside corners use a caulked joint instead.

What Is a Wood & Engineered Wood Siding Calculator?
If you're pricing a natural wood (cedar, pine, redwood) or engineered wood (LP SmartSide-style) re-siding or new-construction exterior cladding job, this calculator answers how many siding boards you need from your own wall sections, window and door openings, and building corners — in either horizontal Lap/Clapboard or vertical Board & Batten style. It returns the board (and batten, for Board & Batten) count, trim (casing) boards, outside corner boards, fasteners, sealant, and an optional field paint/stain quantity and material + labor cost.
It is built for homeowners, siding contractors, and estimators pricing a wood or engineered wood siding job on a house with one or several distinct wall elevations, each with its own size and openings.
What makes this calculator different from this site's other siding calculators:
This is the only siding calculator on this site with TWO genuinely different engines behind one page. Lap/Clapboard style works the way this site's Fiber Cement Lap Siding Calculator does — fully deducting every window and door from gross wall area and deriving each board's reveal from width minus overlap — but with wood/engineered-wood specific board widths and a 1 in minimum overlap (not fiber cement's 1.25 in HardiePlank minimum, each independently sourced from its own material's published guidance). Board & Batten style is a genuinely different vertical engine: full-height boards are spaced across each wall's own width at a pitch of board width plus a small expansion gap, with a batten covering each gap — and, unlike Lap/Clapboard, openings do NOT remove a board/batten column from the piece count, since a vertical board is cut around whatever opening intersects its own column rather than omitted outright. A Material Type toggle (Natural Wood vs. Engineered Wood) further changes the available board-width presets, default finish options, and fastener type recommendation.
Applicable standards:
- The IRC's own minimum lap-siding course overlap (1 in), WRCLA's wood bevel siding installation guidance, and LP's own engineered-wood lap siding installation guidance should always be confirmed against the specific product chosen
- Local building code and wind-load requirements may require tighter fastener spacing than this calculator's default
- This calculator estimates material quantity and cost only, not structural wall design, furring/strapping or rain-screen design, or moisture management/building-envelope performance
How the wood siding calculation works
This calculator runs one of two genuinely different engines depending on the Siding Style selected — Lap/Clapboard (horizontal, area-based) or Board & Batten (vertical, width/pitch-based) — sharing the same wall section, corner, fastener, and cost inputs.
Step 1 - Reveal, siding order area, and board coverage (Lap/Clapboard)
Reveal (in) = Board Width - Overlap (1 in published minimum)
Siding Order Area = SUM(Wall Width x Height) - SUM(ALL Window Area + ALL Door Area)
Board Coverage (sq ft) = 16 ft x (Reveal / 12)
Waste-Adjusted Area = Siding Order Area x (1 + Waste % / 100)
Boards Needed = CEIL(Waste-Adjusted Area / Board Coverage)
Every window and door is deducted here, regardless of size — the same convention independently verified for this site's Fiber Cement Lap Siding Calculator, since wood/engineered-wood lap boards don't interlock the way vinyl panels do.
Step 2 - Starter strip, trim boards, and corner boards
Starter Strip Length = SUM(Wall Section Base Width) x (1 + Waste % / 100)
Trim Board Length = SUM(Opening Perimeter) x 1.10 x (1 + Waste % / 100)
Pieces per Corner Leg = CEIL(Overall Wall Height / 16 ft stock length)
Outside Corner Boards = Outside Corners x Pieces per Leg x 2 faces
A window's opening perimeter uses all 4 sides; a door uses only the top and 2 sides, since its bottom meets the threshold. Corner boards are a packing problem, not a ratio — sized from Overall Wall Height (the tallest point they must cover), not scaled by the Waste Allowance.
Step 3 - Fasteners, sealant, finish, and cost
Fasteners = CEIL(Total Coursing or Board/Batten Linear Ft x 12 / Fastener Spacing) + Pieces
Sealant Length = (Opening Perimeter + Outside Corners x Height x 2 + Inside Corners x Height) x Waste Multiplier
Paint/Stain Gallons = CEIL(Waste-Adjusted Area x 2 coats / 350 sq ft per gallon per coat), when Finish Type is Primed or Unfinished
Total Cost = Board + Batten (Board & Batten only) + Trim + Corner Board + Nail + Sealant + Paint + Labor Cost
Fasteners are counted from your selected on-center spacing (WRCLA/LP both cap at 24 in O.C.) applied to the total coursing or board/batten linear footage, plus one end-nail per piece. Sealant covers trim-to-siding and corner joints. Field paint/stain is estimated whenever Finish Type is Primed or Unfinished — never for Prefinished.
Real-World Wood Siding Calculation Example
This example uses the active calculator inputs above and follows the same steps from the formula section.
Input Values Used
| Input | Value | Why it is used |
|---|---|---|
| Material / Style | Natural Wood / Lap/Clapboard | Selects the board-width presets and which engine runs |
| Wall Sections | 1 section(s) | Sums to the total siding order area |
| Board Width / Overlap | 7.5 in / 1 in | Derives the 6.5 in reveal |
| Waste Allowance | 10% | Added to boards, starter strip, trim boards, frieze trim, and sealant |
Step 1 — Siding Order Area & Boards
| Calculation | Formula / Substitution | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Gross area minus every window/door (full deduction) | 270 sq ft - 44 sq ft | 226 sq ft siding order area |
| Waste-adjusted area | 226 x (1 + 10/100) | 248 sq ft |
| Boards needed | ROUND UP(248 / 8.67) | 29 board(s) (2.5 squares) |
Step 2 — Trim & Corners
| Calculation | Formula / Substitution | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Trim (casing) boards | ROUND UP(54 ft / 16 ft) | 4 pc(s) |
| Outside corner boards | 4 x 1 x 2 faces | 8 pc(s) |
Therefore, for this job you need 29 board(s) (2.5 squares), 4 trim piece(s), and 8 corner board(s).
Essential Checklist+−
Complete these critical checks before approving the work or proceeding to the next construction stage.
✓Measurement & Takeoff+-
- Every wall section's width and height were measured on site, not estimated from a floor plan alone.
- Window and door counts and typical sizes were recorded for each wall section that has openings, not assumed uniform across the whole house.
- Outside and inside corner counts match the building's actual footprint, including any bump-outs, bay windows, or wing additions.
- Overall wall height (corner boards and inside-corner sealant only) reflects the tallest point they must run — separate from each wall section's own height, which drives that wall's own coursing or board run.
✓Material & Style Selection+-
- Material type (Natural Wood vs. Engineered Wood) matches the actual product being ordered, since this changes the available board widths, default finish options, and fastener type recommendation.
- Siding style (Lap/Clapboard vs. Board & Batten) matches the actual design — switching this changes the entire calculation method, not just a label.
- Board width selected matches the actual product ordered, not assumed from a generic default.
- For Lap/Clapboard: overlap entered matches the installer's actual planned overlap (1 in published minimum) — this directly sets the derived reveal and course count.
- Board/batten stock length was confirmed against the actual supplier SKU, since this calculator's 16 ft assumption may not match every supplier.
✓Finish & Fastening+-
- Finish type (Prefinished, Primed, or Unfinished) matches the actual product ordered, since this changes whether a field-paint quantity is needed.
- Fastener TYPE is corrosion-resistant and appropriate to the material — hot-dip galvanized or stainless for natural wood (to avoid tannin staining), a standard coated siding nail acceptable for engineered wood.
✓Trim, Corners & Installation+-
- Trim (casing) boards are planned around every window and door opening (3-sided for doors, 4-sided for windows).
- Outside corners use full-height corner boards on both faces; inside corners are butted and caulked rather than boarded.
- Board, trim, corner, and fastener quantities including the waste allowance — not the raw calculated totals — were used for the material order.

- Gable end walls were added as their own row with a reasonable average height, or their triangular area was measured and compared separately.

- For Lap/Clapboard: overlap entered matches the installer's actual planned overlap (1 in published minimum) — this directly sets the derived reveal and course count.
- For Board & Batten: board gap and batten width match the actual planned installation, not left at generic defaults.
- Fastener spacing (16 in studs, 24 in max, or 12 in high-wind) matches the local code/wind-load requirement for this job, not just this calculator's default.
- Fastener TYPE is corrosion-resistant and appropriate to the material — hot-dip galvanized or stainless for natural wood (to avoid tannin staining), a standard coated siding nail acceptable for engineered wood.
- Waste allowance (5-15%) matches the job's actual complexity — more openings, cuts, and gables need a higher allowance.
✓Trim, Corners & Installation+-
- Trim (casing) boards are planned around every window and door opening (3-sided for doors, 4-sided for windows).
- Outside corners use full-height corner boards on both faces; inside corners are butted and caulked rather than boarded.
- For Board & Batten: furring/strapping behind vertical boards (if the wall needs it) and a rain-screen gap were planned separately — this calculator does not estimate that material.
- Board, trim, corner, and fastener quantities including the waste allowance — not the raw calculated totals — were used for the material order.
- Housewrap/weather-resistant barrier condition was confirmed intact and properly lapped before siding installation began.
- If Primed or Unfinished finish was selected, field paint or stain was applied in the required coats before/shortly after installation.
- Final elevation was checked for level/plumb courses or columns, consistent reveal or gap, and properly seated corner boards and trim before calling the job complete.

How to Use the Wood Siding Calculator
- Enter the overall wall height and your building's outside/inside corner count.
- Add one wall section per elevation with its width, height, and any window/door counts and average sizes.
- Choose a material type (Natural Wood or Engineered Wood) and a siding style (Lap/Clapboard or Board & Batten).
- Choose a board width matching your product, and confirm the overlap (Lap/Clapboard) or gap and batten width (Board & Batten).
- Pick a fastener spacing and finish type, set a waste allowance, and add optional cost inputs for a full material + labor estimate.
Practical Wood Siding Tips
- Use hot-dip galvanized (never electro-galvanized) or stainless fasteners on natural wood — cedar and redwood's tannins can corrode and stain around a weaker coating.
- Back-prime or seal all 6 sides of unfinished natural wood boards, including cut ends, before installation — end-grain is the fastest path for moisture intake.
- Leave the full recommended 1/8-3/16 in gap between Board & Batten boards — a tight-fit installation can buckle the boards once they swell seasonally.
- Nail battens only through the gap into the framing/strapping behind, never through either board — this lets the boards move independently underneath.
- Plan a rain-screen gap and, if the wall needs it, horizontal furring/strapping behind vertical Board & Batten siding — this calculator does not estimate that material.
- Order 2-3 extra boards beyond this calculator's waste-adjusted total for future repairs — matching an older board's weathered color/grain can be difficult years later.
Common Mistakes
- Using a standard bright/electro-galvanized nail on cedar or redwood, causing tannin staining and premature fastener corrosion.
- Nailing a Board & Batten batten through the board underneath instead of only through the gap into the framing, which locks the board and can cause it to split or buckle.
- Assuming openings reduce the Board & Batten board/batten count the same way they do for Lap/Clapboard — they don't, since a vertical board is cut around an opening rather than omitted.
- Skipping a rain-screen gap or needed furring/strapping behind vertical siding, which this calculator does not estimate for you.
- Leaving no expansion gap between Board & Batten boards, causing buckling once the boards swell seasonally.
- Ordering a Prefinished product's paint budget by mistake, or forgetting to budget paint/stain for a Primed or Unfinished product.
- Assuming every stock board/trim piece is 16 ft without checking the actual supplier SKU.
Wood Siding Calculator Limitations
- This calculator provides estimation only and does not replace a manufacturer's installation guide or a site-specific survey.
- Lap/Clapboard fully deducts every window and door from the siding order area; Board & Batten does NOT reduce the board/batten piece count for openings (only the reported siding order area) — a disclosed, deliberate difference between the two styles, not an inconsistency.
- Board & Batten board width presets are shared across both materials (actual dimensional-lumber sizing), a disclosed simplification — Lap/Clapboard presets ARE split by material (Natural Wood vs. Engineered Wood), since those real published width lineups genuinely differ.
- This calculator does not estimate furring/strapping behind vertical Board & Batten siding or a rain-screen gap — plan that material separately if your wall assembly needs it.
- The waste allowance applies to Lap/Clapboard boards, starter strip, trim boards, and sealant. For Board & Batten, it applies to fasteners, trim boards, and sealant — NOT the board/batten piece count, which (like corner boards) is an exact packing-problem count based on wall/corner geometry alone, not a continuous run.
- Each wall section is modeled as a rectangle. A triangular gable end should be entered with an average height approximation, or measured separately.
- Board, trim, and corner board stock length is assumed at 16 ft, a single disclosed assumption — confirm your actual supplier SKU before ordering.
- The fastener count is a planning approximation based on selected spacing, not a substitute for an actual stud layout or a local wind-load fastening schedule.
- Field paint/stain coverage (~350 sq ft/gallon/coat) is a disclosed general figure — confirm against your specific product's spec sheet, especially for stain, which can vary more than paint.
- This calculator estimates material quantity and cost only, not structural wall design or moisture management/building-envelope performance.
- Final board width, overlap/gap, stock lengths, fastener spacing, and finish should follow the local building code and the specific manufacturer's current installation instructions.
