Inputs

Enter Fill Area

ℹ️Total lawn, bed, or plot area to be filled or topped with topsoil.

ℹ️Typical for Topsoil / Compost Blend: 1-3 in.

ℹ️A lighter blend of topsoil and compost, commonly used to prepare a bed for seeding/sodding or to refresh existing garden soil structure without a full deep fill.

Topsoil Needed

Fill Area

500 sq ft

46.45 m² at 0.5" (1.3 cm) deep

Volume

Bare volume: 20.83 cu ft (0.772 cu yd / 0.59 m³)

Order volume (+15% settling/waste): 23.96 cu ft

0.887 cu yd / 0.678 m³ / 678.4 L

Bulk / Loose

Order: 0.887 cu yd (0.678 m³)

1 bulk/jumbo bag(s)

Assumes a ≈1 m³ (≈35 cu ft) bulk/FIBC bag, the common UK/AU size — a US bulk delivery is usually by the loose cubic yard instead.

Topsoil / Compost Blend

A lighter blend of topsoil and compost, commonly used to prepare a bed for seeding/sodding or to refresh existing garden soil structure without a full deep fill.

Typical depth range: 1-3 in (general practice guidance, not a fixed standard)

0.5 in is shallower than the 1-3 in typical range for Topsoil / Compost Blend — this may be intentional for a light topdressing, but double-check it fits your intended use.

Lawn topdressing topsoil volume

Lawn topdressing spreads a thin, even layer of topsoil (often blended with compost) over existing turf to level minor low spots, improve soil structure, and support overseeding — typically at a depth of about 0.5-1 inch rather than a deep fill.

This page defaults to a 500 sq ft lawn area at 0.5 in deep with a topsoil/compost blend — edit the inputs above to match your actual lawn size and preferred topdressing depth.

Topsoil Calculator Formula: How Is It Determined?

Fill area and depth combine into a bare volume, a settling/waste allowance is added, then the order volume converts to either a bag count or a bulk quantity.

Step 1 — Fill Area

By Dimensions: Area = Length x Width

By Total Area: Area = entered value (converted to sq ft if entered in m²)

Either enter a rectangular area's length and width, or enter its total area directly — useful for an irregular lawn, bed, or plot where length x width doesn't apply.

Step 2 — Bare & Order Volume

Bare Volume = Area x Depth

Order Volume = Bare Volume x (1 + 15% settling/waste)

The 15% allowance covers typical settling and compaction once topsoil is watered in and worked — a bit higher than a loose organic mulch's allowance, since topsoil compacts more.

Step 3a — Bagged

Bags = ceil(Order Volume / Bag Volume)

Bag volume is stored as a canonical liter figure internally, so both cu-ft-sized (US) and litre-sized (UK/AU) bags come from the same preset list, or enter a custom bag size in either unit.

Step 3b — Bulk / Loose

Order Volume shown directly in cu yd and m³

Bulk Bags (≈1 m³ each) = ceil(Order Volume in m³)

Bulk topsoil is most often bought loose by the cubic yard (common in the US) — the bulk/FIBC (~1 m³) bag count is shown as an additional reference figure, since that's a common bulk-bag size in the UK and Australia.

Worked Example

This example walks through your current inputs above, using the same steps as the Formula section.

Input Values Used

InputValueWhy it is used
Fill Area500 sq ft (46.45 m²)Sets bare volume
Depth0.5 in (1.3 cm) — Topsoil / Compost BlendSets bare volume and depth-advisory check
Delivery MethodBulk / LooseSets bag count or bulk quantity

Step 1 & 2 — Volume

CalculationResult
Bare Volume = 500 sq ft x (0.5/12) ft20.83 cu ft (0.772 cu yd / 0.59 m³)
Order Volume = Bare Volume x (1 + 15%)23.96 cu ft (0.887 cu yd / 0.678 m³)

Step 3 — Bulk / Loose

CalculationResult
Bulk Bags = ceil(1 m³ / 1 m³)1 bulk bag(s)

Figures above are rounded for display; the bag/bulk count is always calculated from full, unrounded values, so it can occasionally look off by one bag if you redo the division yourself using the rounded figures shown.

Therefore, a 500 sq ft area at 0.5" deep needs approximately 0.887 cu yd of topsoil / compost blend.

FAQ

Typically about 0.25-1 inch — deep enough to improve the soil surface and support overseeding without smothering existing turf grass blades, which is a real risk if the layer is applied too thick.
At 0.5 in deep, a 500 sq ft lawn needs roughly 9-10 cu ft of bare volume before the settling/waste allowance — enter your exact lawn area above for a precise figure including that allowance.
