Wall Tile Adhesive Calculator (Tile Adhesive Bags & Cost)

Estimate tile adhesive quantity, bags, and cost.

Inputs

Section 1: Tiled Area & Tile Size

ℹ️Known-area mode is quickest if you already have the tiled area. Use room dimensions if you'd rather enter length and width directly.

Multiple Areas (Floor + Wall, etc.)?

ℹ️Use total floor or wall tile area. Room dimensions are not required.

Common tile sizes

Section 2: Trowel Notch & Adhesive Bed

ℹ️Auto-suggested from your tile size — pick a value to override, and later tile-size edits won't overwrite your choice. Choose Custom to enter your own figures from a product datasheet.

ℹ️Auto-suggested from your tile size (0% under 300mm, up to 50% at 900mm+) — pick a value to override, and later tile-size edits won't overwrite your choice.

Section 3: Wastage & Bag Size

ℹ️Auto-suggested from total area and area count (10% simple job, 15% for a small area or multiple areas) — still editable.

20 kg bags are already the least-waste size for this job — about 9.9% leftover (11.89 kg) in the last bag.

Section 4: Cost

Enable Cost Estimation?

Recommended tile adhesive: 108.11 kg (6 bags)

Adhesive Summary

Total Tiled Area: 18.00 m²

Base Adhesive: 75.60 kg

Back-Buttering: 22.68 kg

Wastage Added: 10% (9.83 kg)

Final Adhesive Required: 108.11 kg

Bags & Coverage

Bags Required: 6 bags

Coverage per Bag: 3.66 m²

Quick Insight

Buy at least 6 bags including 10% wastage.

Calculated from tiled area, adhesive bed thickness, and coverage rate, plus back-buttering and wastage allowances.

Assumptions Used

Back-buttering: 30% of base adhesive | Wastage: 10% applied once to the combined total | Bag count rounded up to the next whole bag.

Wall tile adhesive estimate

This page uses a thinner 3mm adhesive bed for an 18 m² wall — base adhesive is 75.6 kg (18 m² x 3 mm x 1.4 kg/m²/mm), about 5 bags at 20 kg each after 10% wastage.

Wall tiles use a much thinner bed and lower coverage rate than floor tiles, since they're lighter and a thick bed would slump on a vertical surface before it sets.

  • Area: 18 m².
  • Bed: 3 mm.
  • Tile: 300 x 600 mm.

How the tile adhesive calculation works

The calculation uses tiled area, adhesive bed thickness, and coverage rate — with bed thickness and coverage rate normally set by your trowel notch choice. Back-buttering and wastage are added afterward, before dividing by bag size.

Step 1 - Calculate base adhesive

Tiled Area = Room Length x Room Width, or entered known area

Base Adhesive = Tiled Area x Bed Thickness x Coverage Rate

Multiple Areas = Sum of every area's base adhesive above, combined into one total

Calculation Mode lets you enter area directly or let the calculator work it out from room length and width — both feed the same base adhesive formula. Switching on Multiple Areas lets you combine floor, wall, or several rooms with different tile sizes and notch presets in one run — each area keeps its own bed thickness and coverage rate.

Step 2 - Add back-buttering

Back-Buttering = Base Adhesive x Back-Buttering %

Adhesive Before Wastage = Base Adhesive + Back-Buttering

Back-buttering is auto-suggested from tile size (0% under 300mm, up to 50% at 900mm+), but you can always override it — for example if the adhesive datasheet recommends a different figure.

Step 3 - Add wastage

Wastage = Adhesive Before Wastage x Wastage %

Final Adhesive = Adhesive Before Wastage + Wastage

Wastage covers mixing residue, trowel loss, and site handling — applied once to the combined total across all areas, not per area.

Step 4 - Calculate bags and cost

Bags = ceil(Final Adhesive / Bag Size)

Cost = Bags x Price per Bag

Bag count is rounded up because adhesive is normally purchased in full bags. Cost only appears when Enable Cost Estimation is switched on and a price per bag is entered.

Real-World Tile Adhesive Calculation Example

This example uses the active inputs above and follows the same steps from the formula section.

FAQ

Wall tiles are usually lighter and smaller than floor tiles, so a smaller trowel notch (and thinner bed) gives adequate contact without adhesive sagging or slumping on a vertical surface before it sets.
BS EN 12004 specifies a minimum 65% contact coverage for wall tiles (versus 80% for floor tiles) — still enough to need a proper notched-trowel technique, not just a skim coat.
