What is the purpose of this Tile Adhesive Calculator?
This tile adhesive calculator estimates how much tile glue or thin-set mortar is needed to install tiles on floors or walls. It uses total tiled area, expected adhesive bed thickness, adhesive coverage rate, wastage, bag size, and optional bag price.
The calculator is useful when you already know the tiled area, or when the tile calculator passes the total area and tile size through the URL. Room dimensions are not required because adhesive quantity is mainly based on surface area and bedding thickness.
Estimating adhesive before work starts helps avoid shortages, reduces overbuying, and gives a practical bag count for floor tiles, wall tiles, bathrooms, kitchens, backsplashes, and other tile finishing work.
How tile adhesive calculation works
The calculation uses the tiled area and expected adhesive consumption per millimeter of bed thickness. Thicker beds, larger notch trowels, uneven substrates, and back-buttering increase adhesive use.
Step 1 - Convert tiled area
The total tiled area is converted to square meters. You can enter area in m2, square feet, or square yards.
Step 2 - Convert adhesive bed thickness
Adhesive bed thickness is converted to millimeters. This is the approximate finished adhesive thickness under the tile after pressing the tile into the notched adhesive.
Step 3 - Calculate base adhesive
The default coverage rate is 1.5 kg/m2/mm. If the adhesive bag or datasheet gives a different value, use that for better accuracy.
Step 4 - Add back-buttering and wastage
Back-buttering is optional, but it is often used for large tiles or tiles with deep back profiles. Wastage covers mixing loss, trowel loss, and site handling.
Step 5 - Calculate bags and cost
Cost = Bags x Price per Bag
Bag count is rounded up because adhesive is normally purchased in full bags.
Calculation example for Tile Adhesive Calculator
This example uses the active tiled area, adhesive bed thickness, coverage rate, back-buttering allowance, wastage, bag size, and optional price from this programmatic calculator page.
- Tiled Area = 20 m2
- Tile Size = 600 mm x 600 mm
- Bed Thickness = 4 mm
- Coverage Rate = 1.5 kg/m²/mm
- Bag Size = 20 kg
Step 1 - Calculate base adhesive
Base Adhesive = Area x Bed Thickness x Coverage Rate
Base Adhesive = 120 kg
Step 2 - Add back-buttering allowance
Back-Buttering = 0 kg
Adhesive Before Wastage = 120 kg
Step 3 - Add wastage
Wastage = 12 kg
Final Adhesive = 132 kg
Step 4 - Calculate bags and cost
Bags Required = 7
Coverage per Bag = 3.33 m²
Cost is shown when price per bag is entered.
For this page, plan for about 132 kg of tile adhesive, rounded to 7 bags.
Approximate adhesive reference table
The table below shows approximate adhesive requirement for 20 m2 tiled area using 1.5 kg/m2/mm coverage rate, before wastage.
| Bed Thickness | Approx. Adhesive | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| 3 mm | 90 kg | Small wall tiles, flat surface |
| 4 mm | 120 kg | Common floor or wall tiles |
| 6 mm | 180 kg | Large tiles or uneven substrate |
Tile adhesive estimation tips
- Use the adhesive manufacturer coverage chart when available.
- Increase bed thickness for uneven substrates only when the adhesive product allows it.
- Use back-buttering for large format tiles when full contact is required.
- Keep extra adhesive for trowel loss, mixing loss, and small site corrections.
- Do not use tile adhesive to correct large floor or wall level differences unless the product is designed for thick beds.
When should you use this tile adhesive calculator?
- Estimating adhesive bags for floor tile installation
- Estimating tile glue for wall tiles and bathroom tiles
- Planning thin-set mortar for kitchens, backsplashes, and wet areas
- Comparing adhesive needs for different bed thicknesses
- Checking adhesive cost when bag price is known
Limitations of tile adhesive estimation
This calculator gives a planning estimate. Actual adhesive consumption can vary depending on trowel notch, tile back profile, substrate flatness, installer technique, adhesive type, and required contact coverage.
Product datasheets and site conditions should guide final ordering. Very uneven surfaces, heavy stone tiles, exterior work, swimming pools, and specialty adhesives may need different assumptions.
This calculator provides an estimate. Actual coverage can vary by adhesive type, trowel notch, substrate condition, tile back profile, and installation method.
