Sod material cost estimate

Material cost is driven mainly by total lawn area and your chosen sod source — enter your local price per roll, pallet, or slab to get a full cost estimate.

This page enables cost estimation by default with a 40 ft × 25 ft example ordered by the pallet — edit the inputs and price above to match your actual project and local rates.

Sod / Turf Calculator Formula: How Is It Determined?

Lawn area combines with a waste allowance into an order area, which then converts into a roll, pallet, or slab count.

Step 1 — Lawn Area

By Dimensions: Area = Length x Width

By Total Area: Area = entered value (converted to sq ft if entered in m²)

Either enter a rectangular lawn's length and width, or enter its total area directly — useful for an irregular lawn where length x width doesn't apply.

Step 2 — Order Area

Order Area = Lawn Area x (1 + 5% cutting/edge waste)

The 5% allowance covers scrap from trimming pieces to fit curves, corners, and obstacles — this is a cutting allowance, not a settling allowance, since sod doesn't settle the way loose fill volume does.

Step 3 — Roll / Pallet / Slab Count

Units Needed = ceil(Order Area / Unit Size)

Unit size is stored as a canonical sq ft figure internally, so US roll/pallet sizes (sq ft) and UK/AU slab/turf-roll sizes (m²) come from the same underlying calculation, or enter a custom unit size in either unit.

Worked Example

This example walks through your current inputs above, using the same steps as the Formula section.

Step 3 — Pallets

CalculationResult
Pallets = ceil(1050 / 450 sq ft per pallet)3 pallets

Figures above are rounded for display; the roll/pallet/slab count is always calculated from full, unrounded values, so it can occasionally look off by one unit if you redo the division yourself using the rounded figures shown.

Therefore, a 1000 sq ft lawn needs approximately 3 pallets of sod.

FAQ

Sod material cost only, based on the price you enter per roll, pallet, or slab. It does not include delivery fees, site preparation, soil amendment, or installation labor, which vary significantly by region and contractor.
Yes — some grass species and specialty cultivars cost noticeably more per pallet than common general-purpose varieties, reflecting differences in growing time, water needs, and regional availability.
