Starter Fertilizer Calculator for New Lawn (High-Phosphorus Starter)

Size starter fertilizer for your new lawn instantly.

Enter Lawn Area

ℹ️Total lawn area to be fertilized.

Application Scenario

Application Scenario

Commonly cited starter range is 0.5-1 lb N/1,000 sq ft at seeding or sodding — rates above roughly 1.5 lb N/1,000 sq ft risk burning young, still-shallow-rooted turf. Pair with a high-phosphorus starter product (phosphorus supports early root development) rather than a high-nitrogen product.

Fertilizer Product

ℹ️N-P-K ratio sets how much of the product's weight is actual nitrogen (N) — a higher N percent means fewer lb of product needed for the same nitrogen dose. Select Custom N-P-K Ratio to enter your own product's exact label ratio.

A representative high-phosphorus starter ratio commonly cited for new seeding/sod establishment — phosphorus supports early root development. Many US states and localities restrict phosphorus fertilizer use on already-established lawns; confirm local rules before applying a phosphorus product outside of new establishment.

Is This a Slow/Controlled-Release Product?

Check your product's label for terms like "slow-release," "controlled-release," "coated," or "WIN" (water-insoluble nitrogen). This cannot be determined from the N-P-K ratio alone — Purdue Extension's higher single-application safe-nitrogen threshold only applies when roughly half or more of the product's nitrogen is slow/controlled-release.

Starter fertilizer for new lawn establishment

A high-phosphorus starter ratio (commonly cited around 10-20-10) supports early root development for new seeding, sod, or overseeding — phosphorus, not nitrogen, is what drives strong initial rooting, and this calculator's New Lawn/Starter scenario is built to pair with it.

This page defaults to a 2,500 sq ft new lawn at the New Lawn/Starter scenario's 1 lb N/1,000 sq ft rate with a high-phosphorus starter product — edit the inputs above to match your actual project size.

Lawn Fertilizer Calculator Formula: How Is It Determined?

Lawn area combines with a target nitrogen rate (set by application scenario or a custom override) into a total nitrogen dose, which converts into a product weight using the product's N percent, then into a bag count.

Step 1 — Lawn Area

By Dimensions: Area = Length x Width

By Total Area: Area = entered value (converted to sq ft if entered in m²)

Either enter a rectangular lawn's length and width, or enter its total area directly — useful for an irregular lawn where length x width doesn't apply.

Step 2 — Nitrogen Needed

Nitrogen Needed (lb) = (Area / 1,000) x Target N Rate (lb per 1,000 sq ft)

Each application scenario has its own commonly-recommended target nitrogen rate — or enter your specific product's ACTUAL nitrogen rate directly with the Custom Target Rate option (convert a bag's product application rate to actual N by multiplying it by the product's N% ÷ 100 — a bag label typically states lb of PRODUCT to apply, not lb of nitrogen).

Step 3 — Product Weight & Bag Count

Product Needed = Nitrogen Needed / (N percent / 100)

Bags Needed = ceil(Product Needed / Bag Size)

A higher-N product needs fewer lb of product for the same nitrogen dose. Product weight is calculated in lb internally (with a kg figure always shown alongside), then divided by your selected bag size and rounded up to the next whole bag.

Worked Example

This example walks through your current inputs above, using the same steps as the Formula section.

Input Values Used

InputValueWhy it is used
Lawn Area2500 sq ft (232.2576 m²)Sets total nitrogen dose
Application ScenarioNew Lawn / StarterSets the target nitrogen rate
Fertilizer ProductStarter Fertilizer, High-Phosphorus (10-20-10) (N-P-K 10-20-10)Sets the product-weight divisor
Bag Size15 lb (≈6.8 kg) — small-medium bag15 lbSets the bag-count divisor

Step 1 & 2 — Area & Nitrogen Needed

CalculationResult
Lawn Area2500 sq ft (232.2576 m²)
Nitrogen Needed = (2500 / 1,000) x 1 lb N2.5 lb (1.134 kg)

Step 3 — Product Weight & Bags

CalculationResult
Product Needed = 2.5 lb N / (10% N / 100)25 lb (11.34 kg)
Bags = ceil(25 / 15 lb per bag)2 bags

Figures above are rounded for display; the bag count is always calculated from full, unrounded values, so it can occasionally look off by one bag if you redo the division yourself using the rounded figures shown.

Therefore, a 2500 sq ft lawn getting a New Lawn / Starter application with Starter Fertilizer, High-Phosphorus needs approximately 25 lb (11.34 kg) of fertilizer, or 2 bags.

FAQ

At the New Lawn/Starter default rate (1 lb N/1,000 sq ft) with a 10-20-10 starter product (10% N), a 2,500 sq ft lawn needs roughly 25 lb of product, or two 15 lb bags. Enter your exact lawn area above for a precise count.
No — this calculator blocks that combination. A pre-emergent weed & feed prevents grass seed from germinating at all, and a post-emergent formula can injure young seedlings or newly laid sod. Use a straight starter fertilizer product with no herbicide component for new establishment.
