Nitrogen Fertilizer Calculator for Lawns (lb N per 1,000 sq ft)

Convert your target nitrogen rate into product quantity instantly.

Inputs

Enter Lawn Area

ℹ️Total lawn area to be fertilized.

Application Scenario

Application Scenario

A light maintenance rate. For cool-season lawns, several extension sources (e.g. Purdue Turfgrass Science) advise little to no nitrogen during peak summer heat, since it can stress an already heat-stressed lawn — warm-season lawns actively growing in summer heat generally tolerate this rate better. Consider skipping this application during a heat/drought stretch.

Fertilizer Product

ℹ️N-P-K ratio sets how much of the product's weight is actual nitrogen (N) — a higher N percent means fewer lb of product needed for the same nitrogen dose. Select Custom N-P-K Ratio to enter your own product's exact label ratio.

Representative of common quick-release, high-nitrogen consumer lawn fertilizers used for spring green-up or general season feeding.

Is This a Slow/Controlled-Release Product?

Check your product's label for terms like "slow-release," "controlled-release," "coated," or "WIN" (water-insoluble nitrogen). This cannot be determined from the N-P-K ratio alone — Purdue Extension's higher single-application safe-nitrogen threshold only applies when roughly half or more of the product's nitrogen is slow/controlled-release.

Use Custom Target Rate?
lb ACTUAL N/1,000 sq ft

ℹ️This must be actual NITROGEN, not product weight — a bag label commonly states a PRODUCT application rate (e.g. "apply 4.5 lb per 1,000 sq ft"), which is a different, larger number than the nitrogen it delivers. To convert: actual N rate = product rate x (N% / 100) — e.g. 4.5 lb product at 20% N = 0.9 lb actual N. Entering the product rate here by mistake will overstate how much fertilizer you need by several times. This overrides the application scenario's default rate above. A rate above roughly 1 lb N/1,000 sq ft per application (2 lb for a confirmed slow/controlled-release product) risks fertilizer burn.

Nitrogen rate to product quantity

Lawn fertilizer is applied by targeting a specific weight of actual NITROGEN per 1,000 sq ft — the near-universal US lawn-care convention — which this calculator converts into a real product weight and bag count using your product's own N-P-K percentage.

This page defaults to a 3,000 sq ft lawn at a custom 1 lb N/1,000 sq ft target rate with a high-nitrogen quick-release product — edit the target rate and product above to match your specific plan.

Lawn Fertilizer Calculator Formula: How Is It Determined?

Lawn area combines with a target nitrogen rate (set by application scenario or a custom override) into a total nitrogen dose, which converts into a product weight using the product's N percent, then into a bag count.

Step 1 — Lawn Area

By Dimensions: Area = Length x Width

By Total Area: Area = entered value (converted to sq ft if entered in m²)

Either enter a rectangular lawn's length and width, or enter its total area directly — useful for an irregular lawn where length x width doesn't apply.

Step 2 — Nitrogen Needed

Nitrogen Needed (lb) = (Area / 1,000) x Target N Rate (lb per 1,000 sq ft)

Each application scenario has its own commonly-recommended target nitrogen rate — or enter your specific product's ACTUAL nitrogen rate directly with the Custom Target Rate option (convert a bag's product application rate to actual N by multiplying it by the product's N% ÷ 100 — a bag label typically states lb of PRODUCT to apply, not lb of nitrogen).

Step 3 — Product Weight & Bag Count

Product Needed = Nitrogen Needed / (N percent / 100)

Bags Needed = ceil(Product Needed / Bag Size)

A higher-N product needs fewer lb of product for the same nitrogen dose. Product weight is calculated in lb internally (with a kg figure always shown alongside), then divided by your selected bag size and rounded up to the next whole bag.

Worked Example

This example walks through your current inputs above, using the same steps as the Formula section.

Input Values Used

InputValueWhy it is used
Lawn Area3000 sq ft (278.7091 m²)Sets total nitrogen dose
Application ScenarioSummer MaintenanceSets the target nitrogen rate
Fertilizer ProductQuick-Release Lawn Food, High-Nitrogen (29-0-4) (N-P-K 29-0-4)Sets the product-weight divisor
Bag Size15 lb (≈6.8 kg) — small-medium bag15 lbSets the bag-count divisor

Step 1 & 2 — Area & Nitrogen Needed

CalculationResult
Lawn Area3000 sq ft (278.7091 m²)
Nitrogen Needed = (3000 / 1,000) x 1 lb N3 lb (1.361 kg)

Step 3 — Product Weight & Bags

CalculationResult
Product Needed = 3 lb N / (29% N / 100)10.345 lb (4.692 kg)
Bags = ceil(10 / 15 lb per bag)1 bag

Figures above are rounded for display; the bag count is always calculated from full, unrounded values, so it can occasionally look off by one bag if you redo the division yourself using the rounded figures shown.

Therefore, a 3000 sq ft lawn getting a Summer Maintenance application with Quick-Release Lawn Food, High-Nitrogen needs approximately 10.345 lb (4.692 kg) of fertilizer, or 1 bag.

FAQ

Divide the total nitrogen needed (area / 1,000 x target N rate) by the product's N percent (as a decimal) — for example, 3 lb of nitrogen needed at a 29% N product needs 3 / 0.29 ≈ 10.3 lb of product. This calculator does that conversion automatically for your entered area, rate, and product.
A commonly cited safe maximum is roughly 1 lb of actual nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft per single application for a quick-release product (roughly 2 lb for a slow-release product, per Purdue Extension). This calculator flags a target rate above these thresholds with a caution rather than blocking it outright, since guidance varies by product and lawn condition.
