This calculator estimates the capacity a whole-house humidifier (gallons/day) or a portable dehumidifier (pints/day) needs, from your space's floor area, ceiling height, and either construction tightness (humidifier) or dampness level and site conditions (dehumidifier) — following the same industry-standard sizing conventions HVAC contractors and appliance manufacturers use.

Correct humidity control matters for comfort, health (dry air irritates airways and skin; damp air encourages mold and dust mites), and the building itself (both excess dryness and excess moisture stress wood framing, finishes, and furniture).

Why this needs its own calculator, not just a flat sq-ft guess:

  • Humidification load scales with your home's actual AIR VOLUME and how much outdoor air infiltrates — a tight, well-sealed home needs meaningfully less capacity than a drafty one of the same square footage
  • Dehumidification load depends heavily on how damp the space actually is, not just its size — the same room can need anywhere from 20 to 60+ pints/day depending on dampness level alone

Humidifier / Dehumidifier Sizing Formula: How Is It Determined?

Humidifier mode uses a volume-based load formula from an ARI/HARDI industry standard. Dehumidifier mode follows ENERGY STAR's own current dehumidifier buying guide, turned into a continuous area/dampness formula with adjustment factors.

A taller ceiling scales the load up proportionally; below-grade space, missing vapor barriers, higher occupancy, nearby laundry, and a nearby pool/hot tub each add a flat amount (a separate, commonly-cited convention, not from ENERGY STAR's own table). The combined figure is rounded UP to a standard retail tier (22, 30, 35, 50, or 70 pints/day).
