Overseeding an existing, mostly-intact lawn uses roughly half the full new-lawn seeding rate — since the goal is thickening an established canopy and filling gaps, not establishing a lawn from bare soil.

Grass Seed Calculator Formula: How Is It Determined?
Lawn area combines with a species-specific seeding rate (adjusted for application type) into a total seed weight, which then converts into a bag count.
Step 1 — Lawn Area
By Dimensions: Area = Length x Width
By Total Area: Area = entered value (converted to sq ft if entered in m²)
Either enter a rectangular lawn's length and width, or enter its total area directly — useful for an irregular lawn where length x width doesn't apply.
Step 2 — Effective Seeding Rate
New Lawn: Rate = species' full new-lawn rate (lb per 1,000 sq ft)
Overseeding: Rate = new-lawn rate x 50%
Each species has its own reference new-lawn rate (small-seeded species like Kentucky Bluegrass need far less weight per area than large-seeded species like Tall Fescue) — overseeding with the samespecies uses roughly half that rate, since the goal is filling gaps in an established canopy rather than seeding bare soil. This is different from overseeding dormant warm-season turf (e.g. Bermuda) with ryegrass for winter color, which this calculator does not model — see this species' note above if selected.
Step 3 — Seed Weight & Bag Count
