Bare Spot Grass Seed Calculator (Small Patch / Repair Areas)
Size grass seed for a bare spot repair instantly.
🕒 Last updated: September 21, 2026
Inputs
ℹ️Total lawn area to be seeded or overseeded.
Grass Species & Application
ℹ️Seeding rate is set by species — it depends mainly on seed size, growth habit, and cultivar, not simply cool-season vs. warm-season (e.g. Ryegrass and Tall Fescue need far more weight per area than Bermuda or Centipede). St. Augustine is not offered since it has no commercially viable seed (sod/plugs only).
Seed Bag Size
ℹ️Common retail bag sizes — match your specific product's actual bag weight, or enter a custom size.

Assumptions Used
The seeding rate used (typical multi-species blend rate — varies significantly by the specific blend's composition; check the product label when available) is a commonly cited reference figure for Seed Blend / Mix — actual recommended rate varies by seed purity/germination, blend composition, and regional guidance, so a specific seed product's own bag label rate should be used when available (enter it via the "Use Custom Seeding Rate" option above). Overseeding uses 50% of the new-lawn rate, the figure most commonly cited across independent lawn-care sources for repairing/thickening an existing lawn with the SAME species — a heavily thinned or more than half-bare lawn is generally better served by the full new-lawn rate instead. This calculator estimates seed quantity only — it does not verify soil preparation, starter fertilizer, or watering-in schedule.

Seed for bare spot repair
A bare or dead patch has no existing canopy to fill in around, so it should be seeded at the full New Lawn rate for that patch even though the surrounding lawn is established — using the reduced overseeding rate on truly bare soil will under-seed it.
This page defaults to a 50 sq ft repair area seeded with a generic blend at the full new-lawn rate — edit the inputs above to match your actual bare/damaged patch size and species, adding up multiple spots into one total area if you have several.
Grass Seed Calculator Formula: How Is It Determined?
Lawn area combines with a species-specific seeding rate (adjusted for application type) into a total seed weight, which then converts into a bag count.
Step 1 — Lawn Area
By Dimensions: Area = Length x Width
By Total Area: Area = entered value (converted to sq ft if entered in m²)
Either enter a rectangular lawn's length and width, or enter its total area directly — useful for an irregular lawn where length x width doesn't apply.
Step 2 — Effective Seeding Rate
New Lawn: Rate = species' full new-lawn rate (lb per 1,000 sq ft)
Overseeding: Rate = new-lawn rate x 50%
Each species has its own reference new-lawn rate (small-seeded species like Kentucky Bluegrass need far less weight per area than large-seeded species like Tall Fescue) — overseeding with the samespecies uses roughly half that rate, since the goal is filling gaps in an established canopy rather than seeding bare soil. This is different from overseeding dormant warm-season turf (e.g. Bermuda) with ryegrass for winter color, which this calculator does not model — see this species' note above if selected.
Step 3 — Seed Weight & Bag Count
Seed Needed = (Area / 1,000) x Effective Rate
Bags Needed = ceil(Seed Needed / Bag Size)
Seed weight is calculated in lb internally (with a kg figure always shown alongside), then divided by your selected bag size and rounded up to the next whole bag.
Worked Example
This example walks through your current inputs above, using the same steps as the Formula section.
Input Values Used
| Input | Value | Why it is used |
|---|---|---|
| Lawn Area | 50 sq ft (4.6452 m²) | Sets total seed weight |
| Grass Species | Seed Blend / Mix (Generic) | Sets the base seeding rate |
| Application Type | New Lawn (Full Rate) | Sets the effective rate multiplier |
| Bag Size | 3 lb (≈1.4 kg) — small bag — 3 lb | Sets the bag-count divisor |
Step 1 & 2 — Area & Effective Rate
| Calculation | Result |
|---|---|
| Lawn Area | 50 sq ft (4.6452 m²) |
| Effective Rate = 5 lb/1,000 sq ft (full rate) | 5 lb/1,000 sq ft |
Step 3 — Seed Weight & Bags
| Calculation | Result |
|---|---|
| Seed Needed = (50 / 1,000) x 5 lb | 0.25 lb (0.113 kg) |
| Bags = ceil(0 / 3 lb per bag) | 1 bag |
Figures above are rounded for display; the bag count is always calculated from full, unrounded values, so it can occasionally look off by one bag if you redo the division yourself using the rounded figures shown.
Therefore, a 50 sq ft lawn being newly seeded with Seed Blend / Mix needs approximately 0.25 lb (0.113 kg) of seed, or 1 bag.
