Floor Joist Spacing Calculator (12"/16"/19.2"/24" O.C.)

Find your floor joist count instantly.

Inputs

ℹ️The distance each joist crosses, bearing to bearing — sets the joist's cut length.

ℹ️The direction joists are spaced along — determines the joist count.

ℹ️Sets the joist's actual/nominal depth, used for the cantilever check — verify span adequacy separately against a current span table.

in

ℹ️Horizontal projection of the joists past their last support, if any. Commonly limited to the joist's nominal depth (IRC R502.3.3).

Rim Joist & Blocking

Include Rim / Band Joist?
Include Mid-Span Blocking?

ℹ️Standard stock length used to buy rim/band joist and blocking lumber — affects how many boards are needed after joints.

Waste

ℹ️Accounts for cut-offs, damaged pieces, and layout adjustments — 10% is a common estimating default.

Assumptions Used

Standard US residential platform floor framing. Joist count uses the same on-center spacing formula as wall studs and rafters. Joist cut length is your entered span plus any cantilever, rounded up to a real stock lumber length where one covers it — a joist exceeding the longest standard stock length (24 ft) is flagged for a special order, an engineered joist, or an added mid-span bearing point instead. Rim/band joist quantity is based on the framed perimeter; mid-span blocking (when included) is one piece per joist bay, cut to the clear spacing between joists. This calculator selects joist SIZE from your input but does not verify span/size structural adequacy — confirm your selected size against a current, locally-adopted span table or a structural professional before framing. The floor cantilever warning reflects the commonly-cited IRC R502.3.3 rule (cantilever ≤ nominal joist depth) — verify against your locally adopted code edition.

Floor joist count by spacing

Joist spacing (12, 16, 19.2, or 24 inches on-center) directly determines how many floor joists a given building length needs, using the same even-spacing formula as wall studs and roof rafters.

This page defaults to standard 16" O.C. spacing on a 24 ft building length — edit the inputs above to match your actual floor.

Floor Joist Calculator Formula: How Is It Determined?

Joist cut length, joist count, rim/band joist, and mid-span blocking, calculated separately and combined into a material takeoff.

Step 1 — Joist Cut Length

Cut Length = Joist Span + (Cantilever ÷ 12)

Stock Length = smallest standard board ≥ Cut Length

Cut length is your entered span plus any cantilever, converted to feet. This calculator then picks the smallest standard stock length (8-24 ft) that covers it — the actual board you'd buy at a lumberyard.

Step 2 — Joist Count

Joists (before waste) = ceil((Building Length in inches) ÷ Spacing) + 1

Total Joists = ceil(Joists before waste × (1 + Waste Factor ÷ 100))

Joist count uses the same on-center spacing formula as field studs and rafters — one joist at each end plus however many more fit the spacing, then rounded up after applying your waste factor.

Step 3 — Rim/Band Joist & Blocking

Rim Perimeter = 2 × (Cut Length + Building Length)

Rim Boards = ceil(Rim Perimeter ÷ Rim Stock Length)

Blocking Pieces = Joists before waste − 1

Blocking Piece Length = Spacing − 1.5" (lumber thickness)

Blocking Boards = ceil((Blocking Pieces × Blocking Piece Length) ÷ Rim Stock Length)

Rim/band joist length is based on the framed perimeter, using the joist's CUT length (span plus any cantilever) so a cantilevered floor's rim board isn't undercounted, and assuming a simple rectangular floor. Mid-span blocking (when enabled) is one piece per joist bay, cut to the clear spacing between joists.

Worked Example

This example walks through your current inputs above, using the same steps as the Formula section.

Therefore, this 12 ft span, 24 ft floor at 16" O.C. needs approximately 21 joists (12 ft stock) and 5 rim boards.

FAQ

19 joists (24×12 ÷ 16 + 1 = 19), before any waste factor.
Yes — wider spacing (like 24" O.C.) generally needs a deeper or stronger joist for the same span and load than tighter 12" or 16" O.C. spacing. Confirm your chosen size against a current span table for the actual spacing used.
