A floor joist calculator finds the number of floor joists, their cut length, and the rim (band) joist and mid-span blocking needed to frame a floor — the dominant residential floor-framing method in the US. It starts from your joist span (the distance each joist crosses) and building length (the direction joists are spaced along), applies the same on-center spacing formula used for wall studs and rafters, and rounds the cut length up to a real stock lumber length.

Floor takeoffs are done one bearing-to-bearing span at a time — for a floor with multiple sections or a mid-span bearing wall/beam, run this calculator once per section and add the results together.

Why joist size selection matters here:

  • This calculator counts pieces and lengths from the lumber size YOU select — it does not verify that size is structurally adequate for your span and load

Floor Joist Calculator Formula: How Is It Determined?

Joist cut length, joist count, rim/band joist, and mid-span blocking, calculated separately and combined into a material takeoff.

Step 1 — Joist Cut Length

Cut Length = Joist Span + (Cantilever ÷ 12)

Stock Length = smallest standard board ≥ Cut Length

Cut length is your entered span plus any cantilever, converted to feet. This calculator then picks the smallest standard stock length (8-24 ft) that covers it — the actual board you'd buy at a lumberyard.

Step 2 — Joist Count

Joists (before waste) = ceil((Building Length in inches) ÷ Spacing) + 1

Total Joists = ceil(Joists before waste × (1 + Waste Factor ÷ 100))

Joist count uses the same on-center spacing formula as field studs and rafters — one joist at each end plus however many more fit the spacing, then rounded up after applying your waste factor.

Step 3 — Rim/Band Joist & Blocking

Rim Perimeter = 2 × (Cut Length + Building Length)

Rim Boards = ceil(Rim Perimeter ÷ Rim Stock Length)

Blocking Pieces = Joists before waste − 1

Blocking Piece Length = Spacing − 1.5" (lumber thickness)

Blocking Boards = ceil((Blocking Pieces × Blocking Piece Length) ÷ Rim Stock Length)

Rim/band joist length is based on the framed perimeter, using the joist's CUT length (span plus any cantilever) so a cantilevered floor's rim board isn't undercounted, and assuming a simple rectangular floor. Mid-span blocking (when enabled) is one piece per joist bay, cut to the clear spacing between joists.

  • A longer cantilever needs a deeper joist (or an engineered detail) to stay within the commonly-cited nominal-depth limit — check the warning before finalizing an overhang.
  • Confirm whether joists bear directly on top of a sill/beam or hang from joist hangers on a ledger — the hardware needed is completely different.
  • Glue-and-nail the subfloor to the joists to reduce squeaks and improve floor stiffness.
  • Crown every joist (sight down its edge) and install with the crown facing up — a standard framing practice this calculator doesn't track.
  • A 10% waste factor is a reasonable estimating default — increase it for a floor plan with many openings or an irregular shape.
