This page uses a higher 12% wastage allowance instead of the 10% default, suitable for POP-style planning — the same 20 m² room needs about 8 boards for the underlying gypsum board/channel system beneath the POP finish.
POP (Plaster of Paris) ceilings commonly add cove lighting, curves, and multi-level steps on top of a standard gypsum board/channel frame, which is why this page defaults to a higher wastage figure than a simple flat ceiling.
How the false ceiling calculation works
Channel systems (gypsum board, PVC panel) screw boards to a main channel and furring channel frame, with a perimeter channel at the wall line.
Step 1 - Calculate ceiling area
Ceiling Area = Room Length x Room Width x Number of Rooms, or entered known ceiling area

Step 2 - Calculate boards/tiles required
Board Area = Board Length x Board Width
Final Boards = ceil((Ceiling Area / Board Area) x (1 + Wastage / 100))
The same math applies whether you're ordering gypsum boards or grid tiles — only the board/tile dimensions change.
Step 3 - Estimate frame material
Main Channel Lines = ceil(Room Width / Main Channel Spacing) + 1
Main Channel Length = Number of Lines x Room Length
Furring Channel Lines = ceil(Room Length / Furring Channel Spacing) + 1
Furring Channel Length = Number of Lines x Room Width

Furring channels clip perpendicular to the main channel, giving boards a fixing surface at regular intervals.

Screws = Final Boards x Screws per Board
