Deck Framing Calculator Formula: How Is It Determined?

Joist cut length, joist count, ledger board, beam, and posts/footings, calculated separately and combined into a material takeoff.

Step 1 — Joist Cut Length & Count

Cut Length = Joist Span + (Cantilever ÷ 12)

Joists (before waste) = ceil((Deck Length in inches) ÷ Spacing) + 1

Total Joists = ceil(Joists before waste × (1 + Waste Factor ÷ 100))

Cut length is your entered span plus any cantilever past the beam. Joist count uses the same on-center spacing formula as field studs, rafters, and floor joists, then rounded up after applying your waste factor.

Step 2 — Ledger Board & Beam

Ledger Length = Deck Length

Ledger Boards = ceil(Ledger Length ÷ Stock Length)

Beam Length = Deck Length

Beam Segments per Ply = ceil(Beam Length ÷ Stock Length)

Beam Boards = Beam Segments per Ply × Beam Plies

The ledger board and beam are both assumed to run the full deck length, bought in the same selected stock length as the ledger. A beam longer than one stock-length board needs more than one segment per ply, so beam board count scales with however many segments are actually needed — separately, a beam whose full length exceeds even the longest available stock (24 ft) is flagged as needing a splice directly over a post or an engineered beam, regardless of the stock length you buy in.

Posts = ceil(Beam Length ÷ Post Spacing) + 1
