Standard US residential asphalt driveway RESURFACING (overlay) — the existing pavement stays in place as the structural base, so there is no aggregate-base course here, unlike a new driveway build. Milling (optional) removes the worn top layer of the existing surface before the overlay, restoring elevation/drainage and giving the new asphalt a sound surface to bond to; the removed-material figure is informational only, with no waste allowance (nothing is wasted tearing out existing pavement). Overlay tonnage is calculated directly from the target COMPACTED thickness x density plus an 8% waste allowance — no separate compaction allowance, since asphalt is compacted by roller during paving. Crack sealing material takeoff

Asphalt Resurfacing Calculator Formula: How Is It Determined?
Milling, overlay, tack coat, crack sealing, and sealcoat are each calculated using their own real construction logic, then combined into one material takeoff.
Step 1 — Milling (Optional)
Volume = Area x Milling Depth
Weight = Volume x Standard HMA Density
