Staircase Construction Verification Checklist

Essential Checklist+

Complete these critical checks before approving the work or proceeding to the next construction stage.

βœ“18 Inspection Points
βœ“4 Verification Categories
βœ“Staircase Dimensions & Compliance+
  • Riser and tread comply with 2R + T = 600–620mm rule
  • Riser height within 150–190mm β€” 160–170mm recommended for residential
  • Tread (going) width within 250–300mm β€” not less than 250mm per NBC
  • All riser heights identical β€” variation not more than Β±5mm across entire flight
  • Headroom clearance minimum 2100mm measured vertically above stair nosing line
  • Stair width complies with minimum requirements β€” 900mm residential, 1200mm commercial
  • Landings provided at direction changes β€” depth not less than stair width
βœ“Structural Design & Slab Thickness+
  • Waist slab thickness confirmed β€” minimum 100mm, typically 125–150mm for residential
  • Reinforcement size and spacing confirmed from structural drawing
  • Stair support conditions verified β€” supported on beams, walls, or landing slab
βœ“Formwork+
  • Stair soffit formwork level and at correct slope along full stair length
  • Riser boards set plumb and at correct height β€” measured from the waist, not from tread
  • Tread formwork level and at correct width for all steps
  • Stair soffit formwork adequately propped β€” props at maximum 900mm centres
βœ“Concreting & Finishing+
  • Concrete poured from bottom to top of stair β€” not top-down
  • Concrete compacted at each riser zone before moving to the next tread
  • Tread surface finished level and to correct slope (anti-slip 1:100 crossfall)
  • Stair treads and exposed surfaces cured for minimum 7 days
Full QC Checklist+

Verification checklist for staircase design, estimation, and construction β€” covering dimensional compliance, formwork, reinforcement, concrete, nosing, and safety. Use the Essential Checklist for critical design and pre-pour checks; expand to Full QC Checklist for complete quality control from design through finishing.

  • Floor-to-floor height confirmed on site β€” used for riser count calculation
  • Nosing overlap of 25–30mm provided on each tread if specified
  • Handrail height 900mm from nosing β€” confirmed in design before concrete is poured
  • If winder steps are used β€” minimum tread width 150mm at narrow end
βœ“Structural Design & Slab Thickness+
  • Waist slab thickness confirmed β€” minimum 100mm, typically 125–150mm for residential
  • Reinforcement size and spacing confirmed from structural drawing
  • Stair support conditions verified β€” supported on beams, walls, or landing slab
  • Top steel continuity into landing slab or supporting beam confirmed
  • Concrete grade confirmed β€” M20 minimum for RCC staircases
βœ“Formwork+
  • Stair soffit formwork level and at correct slope along full stair length
  • Riser boards set plumb and at correct height β€” measured from the waist, not from tread
  • Tread formwork level and at correct width for all steps

  • Release agent applied to all formwork faces including riser boards
  • Soffit formwork stripping time confirmed β€” minimum 14 days for OPC concrete
βœ“Concreting & Finishing+
  • Concrete poured from bottom to top of stair β€” not top-down
  • Concrete compacted at each riser zone before moving to the next tread
  • Tread surface finished level and to correct slope (anti-slip 1:100 crossfall)
  • Nosing formed cleanly β€” rounded or square edge as per specification
  • Anti-slip surface or inserts confirmed β€” especially for public stairs and external stairs
  • Stair treads and exposed surfaces cured for minimum 7 days
  • Balustrade pocket positions confirmed and formed in concrete during pour
