Weatherstripping & Air-Sealing Verification Checklist
π Last updated: October 14, 2026
Essential Checklist+β
Complete these critical checks before approving the work or proceeding to the next construction stage.
β8 Inspection Points
β4 Verification Categories
βOpening Setup+-
- Every door and window opening was measured on site at its actual rough/finished width and height, not assumed from a plan.
- Opening Type (Door vs. Window) matches the real installation β this determines whether the bottom gets a sweep or a 4th side of perimeter seal.
βWeatherstrip Material Selection+-
- Weatherstrip Material (V-strip vs. foam tape) matches what is actually being purchased, not just the calculator's default.
- Rolls to Buy figure is understood as grouped per material/roll-length combination β V-strip and foam tape rolls never pool into the same count.
βAir Sealing (Caulk & Spray Foam)+-
- Sealant Type (caulk vs. spray foam) matches the actual gap size at each location β caulk for small trim gaps, spray foam for larger gaps like rim joists and sill plates.
- Bead/Gap Width entered for each air-sealing run reflects the actual gap measured on site, not a guessed default.
βInstallation Quality & Final Check+-
- Old, hardened, or compressed weatherstripping was fully removed and the frame cleaned before applying new adhesive-backed material.
- Spray foam used around a door or window frame was a LOW-EXPANSION / door-and-window-rated formula, not standard high-expansion foam that can bow the jamb and bind the opening.

βOpening Setup+-
- Every door and window opening was measured on site at its actual rough/finished width and height, not assumed from a plan.
- Opening Type (Door vs. Window) matches the real installation β this determines whether the bottom gets a sweep or a 4th side of perimeter seal.
- "Identical Openings" count reflects how many separate openings of this exact size exist, not the total opening count for the whole project.
- A door's existing weatherstrip or sweep (if any) was removed and the frame inspected for rot or damage before measuring for new material.
- Window type (double-hung, casement, sliding) was confirmed to actually have an operable sash perimeter that needs sealing β a fixed picture window does not.
βWeatherstrip Material Selection+-
- Weatherstrip Material (V-strip vs. foam tape) matches what is actually being purchased, not just the calculator's default.
- For foam tape, the Roll Length selected matches what the supplier actually stocks (10 ft or 17 ft).
- Rolls to Buy figure is understood as grouped per material/roll-length combination β V-strip and foam tape rolls never pool into the same count.
- Door Sweep / Shoe is turned on only for doors that actually need one β a door with an existing, serviceable sweep doesn't need a replacement counted.
- A door wider than the standard 48 in sweep size was flagged for a custom/oversized order rather than assumed to fit a standard unit.
- Gap size at the door/window frame was checked by hand before ordering β a badly out-of-square or warped frame may need a different weatherstrip profile than this calculator assumes.
βAir Sealing (Caulk & Spray Foam)+-
- Sealant Type (caulk vs. spray foam) matches the actual gap size at each location β caulk for small trim gaps, spray foam for larger gaps like rim joists and sill plates.
- Bead/Gap Width entered for each air-sealing run reflects the actual gap measured on site, not a guessed default.
- Linear Feet to Seal for each run was measured along the actual joint or gap, not estimated from a room's overall dimensions.
- For spray foam, Can Size matches what is actually being purchased (12 oz or 20 oz) β the cost and unit count are priced separately per size.
- Tubes/Cans to Buy figures are understood as pooled across every run of the same sealant and size β not rounded up separately for each individual run.
- A gap wider than roughly 3 in (too large for a single spray foam pass) was identified for backer rod or a different filling method instead of being entered directly.
βInstallation Quality & Final Check+-
- Old, hardened, or compressed weatherstripping was fully removed and the frame cleaned before applying new adhesive-backed material.
- New V-strip or foam tape was tested for a snug (not loose, not binding) seal by closing the door/window before moving to the next opening.
- Spray foam used around a door or window frame was a LOW-EXPANSION / door-and-window-rated formula, not standard high-expansion foam that can bow the jamb and bind the opening.
- Caulk or foam joints were tooled or smoothed while wet where visible, for a clean, weather-resistant finish.
- Waste / Extra Allowance % was checked against how many openings and air-sealing runs are on this job β a small single-door job needs less buffer than a whole-house draft-proofing pass.
- Currency and unit cost entries reflect current local supplier pricing, not a placeholder default.
