Spray Foam Insulation Verification Checklist

Essential Checklist+

Complete these critical checks before approving the work or proceeding to the next construction stage.

βœ“15 Inspection Points
βœ“5 Verification Categories
βœ“Measurement & Planning+
  • Area (length x width) for every attic/roof, wall, and rim-joist/floor section was measured on site, not taken from a floor plan alone.
  • Dimensions were entered in consistent units β€” all feet or all meters, not mixed.
βœ“Product Selection+
  • Target R-value meets or exceeds the local energy code minimum for the climate zone and area type (attic/roof, wall, or rim joist/floor), not just a generic default.
  • Foam type (open-cell or closed-cell) matches the application β€” closed-cell for rim joists, below-grade, or moisture-prone areas; either is viable for above-grade interior walls and vented attics.
  • The specific kit's own current technical data sheet (R-value per inch, density, theoretical yield) was checked against this calculator's figures before finalizing quantity.
  • Required PPE (chemical-rated respirator, nitrile gloves, full skin and eye coverage) is confirmed on hand and rated for isocyanate exposure before the spray date.
βœ“Quantity & Purchasing+
  • Wastage allowance (typically 10-15%) was applied on top of the real board-feet total, not used to replace it.
  • The final kit count including wastage β€” not the raw kit count β€” was used for purchase.
βœ“Installation+
  • Chemical drums/cylinders were warmed/cooled to the kit's specified temperature range before spraying, not sprayed straight from storage.
  • Foam is applied in multiple thin passes (commonly under 2 in closed-cell / under 1.5-2 in open-cell per pass) rather than one thick pass, to avoid off-ratio foam from excess exothermic heat.
  • Installed thickness is spot-checked against the target depth at multiple points across each area before considering the job complete.
βœ“Safety & Final Check+
  • Full PPE (chemical-rated respirator or supplied-air, nitrile gloves, eye protection, and clothing covering all skin) was worn throughout mixing/spraying and while the area remained unventilated.
  • The work area had adequate ventilation (fans/open windows) both during spraying and through the full re-entry/cure time specified on the kit.
  • No open flame, pilot light, or other ignition source was active near the uncured or freshly cured foam, per the kit's safety instructions.
  • The specified thermal/ignition barrier was installed over any spray foam left exposed inside a living space.

Verify measurement, foam type selection, quantity, installation, and safety before covering or finishing over a sprayed area.

βœ“Measurement & Planning+
  • Area (length x width) for every attic/roof, wall, and rim-joist/floor section was measured on site, not taken from a floor plan alone.
  • Openings (windows, doors, large penetrations) were subtracted from wall areas where their combined size is significant.
  • Dimensions were entered in consistent units β€” all feet or all meters, not mixed.
  • Separate area rows were used for sections with genuinely different foam type, target R-value, or area type rather than averaging them into one row.
  • Ambient and substrate temperature at the planned spray date/time were checked against the kit's required operating range (commonly 60-90Β°F).
βœ“Product Selection+
  • A code-compliant thermal/ignition barrier plan (e.g. 1/2 in drywall) is confirmed for any sprayed area inside a living space.
βœ“Quantity & Purchasing+
  • Wastage allowance (typically 10-15%) was applied on top of the real board-feet total, not used to replace it.
  • The final kit count including wastage β€” not the raw kit count β€” was used for purchase.
  • Where multiple foam types are used (e.g. closed-cell rim joist and open-cell attic), each foam type's own kit count was purchased separately, not a single combined total.
  • If a different kit size than this calculator's standard (600 BF closed-cell / 1,350 BF open-cell) is being purchased, the Total Board Feet Needed figure was divided by that kit's own real published yield instead.
βœ“Installation+
  • Chemical drums/cylinders were warmed/cooled to the kit's specified temperature range before spraying, not sprayed straight from storage.
  • Foam is applied in multiple thin passes (commonly under 2 in closed-cell / under 1.5-2 in open-cell per pass) rather than one thick pass, to avoid off-ratio foam from excess exothermic heat.
  • Surfaces to be foamed are clean, dry, and free of dust, grease, or mold-release agents, with adjacent surfaces not being foamed protected or masked.
  • Installed thickness is spot-checked against the target depth at multiple points across each area before considering the job complete.
  • Electrical boxes, recessed lighting, and combustion-appliance clearances retain their required clearance from sprayed foam per the manufacturer and local code.
βœ“Safety & Final Check+
  • Full PPE (chemical-rated respirator or supplied-air, nitrile gloves, eye protection, and clothing covering all skin) was worn throughout mixing/spraying and while the area remained unventilated.
  • The work area had adequate ventilation (fans/open windows) both during spraying and through the full re-entry/cure time specified on the kit.
  • No open flame, pilot light, or other ignition source was active near the uncured or freshly cured foam, per the kit's safety instructions.
  • The specified thermal/ignition barrier was installed over any spray foam left exposed inside a living space.
  • Empty cylinders/drums were disposed of per the kit's SDS and local regulations, not left pressurized or in living/storage areas.
