Drywall Texture Verification Checklist

Essential Checklist+

Complete these critical checks before approving the work or proceeding to the next construction stage.

βœ“14 Inspection Points
βœ“5 Verification Categories
βœ“Measurement & Planning+
  • Area (length x width) for every wall or ceiling plane being textured was measured on site, not taken from a floor plan alone.
  • Dimensions were entered in consistent units β€” all feet or all meters, not mixed.
βœ“Surface Prep & Primer+
  • Joints and fasteners are fully taped, filled, and sanded smooth before any texture is applied β€” texture does not hide an unfinished joint system, it exaggerates it.
  • A PVA/drywall primer-sealer coat was applied to bare, unprimed drywall before texturing, and allowed to fully dry per the product label.
  • Trim, windows, doors, flooring, and fixtures in the work area are masked off and protected from overspray before spraying begins.
βœ“Texture Selection & Mixing+
  • For spray textures, the powder-to-water mix ratio follows the product label β€” too thin produces a weak, washed-out pattern; too thick clogs the hopper gun or sprayer.
  • A small test patch was sprayed or troweled on scrap board (or an inconspicuous area) to confirm pattern, consistency, and nozzle/tip setting before texturing the full area.
βœ“Quantity & Purchasing+
  • Wastage allowance (typically 12-20% for spray textures, 8-12% for skip trowel) was applied on top of the real coverage-rate-based total, not used to replace it.
  • The final bag/container count including wastage β€” not the raw count β€” was used for purchase.
  • Orange Peel/Knockdown (Tuf-Tex) and Popcorn/Acoustic (QT Poly) are different products with different bag sizes (50 lb vs. 40 lb) β€” each was purchased and quantified as its own line, not combined into a single powder total.
βœ“Application & Safety+
  • Knockdown texture is knocked down with a trowel/knife at the correct partial-set time per the product label β€” too early smears the pattern, too late makes it difficult to flatten.
  • A dust mask/respirator and eye protection are used during mixing and spraying β€” airborne texture dust and overspray irritate the eyes and lungs.
  • If disturbing an EXISTING popcorn/acoustic ceiling (built before the mid-1980s) rather than applying new texture, it was tested for asbestos by a qualified lab before any sanding or removal.
  • Full drying/cure time per the product label was allowed before priming or painting over the finished texture.
Full QC Checklist+

Verify measurement, surface prep, texture selection, quantity, and application/safety before closing out a texture job.

βœ“Measurement & Planning+
  • Area (length x width) for every wall or ceiling plane being textured was measured on site, not taken from a floor plan alone.
  • Areas that will NOT be textured (windows, doors, trim, fixtures) were excluded from the entered area, or masking area was subtracted.
  • Separate area rows were used for sections with genuinely different texture type or pattern intensity, rather than averaging them into one row.
  • Dimensions were entered in consistent units β€” all feet or all meters, not mixed.
  • The surface was confirmed to be clean, dry, and free of loose dust or debris before planning the application schedule.
βœ“Surface Prep & Primer+
  • Joints and fasteners are fully taped, filled, and sanded smooth before any texture is applied β€” texture does not hide an unfinished joint system, it exaggerates it.
  • A PVA/drywall primer-sealer coat was applied to bare, unprimed drywall before texturing, and allowed to fully dry per the product label.
  • If re-texturing over existing paint or texture, the surface was confirmed to be sound (no peeling, flaking, or active moisture) before proceeding.
  • Trim, windows, doors, flooring, and fixtures in the work area are masked off and protected from overspray before spraying begins.
βœ“Texture Selection & Mixing+
  • Texture type and pattern intensity match the intended look and any existing matching texture elsewhere in the home.
  • Hopper gun air pressure/nozzle size is appropriate for the chosen texture type β€” a setting tuned for orange peel can underperform for a heavier knockdown pattern, and vice versa.
βœ“Quantity & Purchasing+
  • Wastage allowance (typically 12-20% for spray textures, 8-12% for skip trowel) was applied on top of the real coverage-rate-based total, not used to replace it.
  • The final bag/container count including wastage β€” not the raw count β€” was used for purchase.
  • Orange Peel/Knockdown (Tuf-Tex) and Popcorn/Acoustic (QT Poly) are different products with different bag sizes (50 lb vs. 40 lb) β€” each was purchased and quantified as its own line, not combined into a single powder total.
  • Within each product, powder was purchased from the same production batch/lot where color or performance consistency matters across a large job.
  • Skip trowel compound container size matches what's actually available locally β€” ready-mix pails commonly come in 1, 3.5, and 4.5 gal sizes.
βœ“Application & Safety+
  • Knockdown texture is knocked down with a trowel/knife at the correct partial-set time per the product label β€” too early smears the pattern, too late makes it difficult to flatten.
  • Texture is applied in consistent, even passes across the whole area rather than in isolated sections, to avoid visible pattern-density seams once dry.
  • Adequate ventilation is maintained in the work area while spraying and while the texture dries.
