Drywall Mud Verification Checklist
π Last updated: October 8, 2026
Essential Checklist+β
Complete these critical checks before approving the work or proceeding to the next construction stage.
β9 Inspection Points
β5 Verification Categories
βMeasurement & Planning+-
- Room length, width, and ceiling height were measured on site, not taken from a floor plan alone.
- Dimensions were entered in consistent units β all metres or all feet, not mixed.
βCompound & Tape Selection+-
- Finish level (Level 4 standard vs. Level 5 full skim coat) matches the final paint sheen and lighting conditions planned for the room.
- Wastage allowance (typically 5-15%) was applied on top of the computed quantities, not used to replace them.
βTaping & Embedding+-
- Tape is embedded in a base coat of compound at every flat joint and inside corner, with no dry or unbonded sections.
βFinishing Coats & Corner Bead+-
- A minimum of 2 fill coats is planned on flat joints and 1 on inside corners, per a Level 4 finish.
- For a Level 5 finish, the additional skim coat covers the ENTIRE board surface, not just the joints.
βSanding, Safety & Final Check+-
- Final sanding leaves a smooth, flat surface with no visible ridges before priming β checked under raking (grazing) light.
- Dust protection (mask, eye protection, ventilation) was used throughout sanding.

β5 Verification Categories
βMeasurement & Planning+-
- Room length, width, and ceiling height were measured on site, not taken from a floor plan alone.
- Board/sheet size entered matches what was actually hung β it drives the computed flat-joint seam length.
- Any large opening (garage door, wide sliding door) had both width AND height recorded, with the lintel strip above it (if any) confirmed as still needing compound, tape, and corner bead.
- Outside corners (columns, half-walls, door/window returns) were measured and entered separately β a simple rectangular room has none.
- Dimensions were entered in consistent units β all metres or all feet, not mixed.
βCompound & Tape Selection+-
- Finish level (Level 4 standard vs. Level 5 full skim coat) matches the final paint sheen and lighting conditions planned for the room.
- Compound type (ready-mix vs. setting-type/hot mud) matches the project schedule and the tape type being used β mesh tape bedded in ready-mix alone is a common cracking cause.
- Container/bag size selected matches what is actually available to buy locally.
- Wastage allowance (typically 5-15%) was applied on top of the computed quantities, not used to replace them.
βTaping & Embedding+-
- Tape is embedded in a base coat of compound at every flat joint and inside corner, with no dry or unbonded sections.
- Mesh tape (if used) is bedded in setting-type compound, not ready-mix alone, for adequate crack resistance.
- Corner bead is fastened straight and tight to both legs before any compound is applied over it.
- Each embedding coat is allowed to fully dry (or fully set, for setting-type compound) before the next coat.
βFinishing Coats & Corner Bead+-
- A minimum of 2 fill coats is planned on flat joints and 1 on inside corners, per a Level 4 finish.
- 3 coats are planned on every corner bead and fastener head, feathered progressively wider each coat.
- For a Level 5 finish, the additional skim coat covers the ENTIRE board surface, not just the joints.
- Each coat is applied progressively wider/thinner than the one before, to avoid a visible ridge at the joint edge.
βSanding, Safety & Final Check+-
- Final sanding leaves a smooth, flat surface with no visible ridges before priming β checked under raking (grazing) light.
- Dust protection (mask, eye protection, ventilation) was used throughout sanding.
- Screw/nail dimples are filled flush across all 3 fastener coats, not left proud or sunken.
- Surplus compound was kept sealed/airtight between coats to avoid skinning over and wasting material.
