Tile Adhesive Verification Checklist

Essential Checklist+

Complete these critical checks before approving the work or proceeding to the next construction stage.

βœ“19 Inspection Points
βœ“5 Verification Categories
βœ“Area and Tile Dimensions+
  • Tile area was entered as the net tiled area β€” matching the tile quantity calculation, not the gross room area.
  • Tile size matches the actual tile being used β€” nominal and rectified tile sizes differ from the packaging label.
  • Floor and wall applications were calculated separately β€” bed thickness differs between floor and wall.
  • Large format tiles (600mm or larger) require a notched trowel with larger notch size β€” coverage rate per bag changes with notch size.
  • Dimensions were entered in consistent units.
βœ“Adhesive Type Selection+
  • Adhesive classification matches the application β€” C1 for standard dry areas, C2 for wet areas and large tiles, S1/S2 for deformable substrates.
  • Flexible adhesive (S1 or S2 classification) is specified for tiling over underfloor heating, timber substrates, or exterior applications.
  • White adhesive is specified under light-coloured, translucent, or natural stone tiles β€” grey adhesive shows through.
  • Adhesive compatibility with the waterproofing membrane was confirmed with the manufacturer.
βœ“Bed Thickness and Coverage+
  • Bed thickness entered in the calculator matches the trowel notch size being used β€” coverage per bag is trowel-dependent.
  • Back-buttering is specified for large format tiles (600mm and above) to achieve full contact β€” increases adhesive consumption.
  • Minimum 80% adhesive contact coverage was confirmed for floor tiles; 65% minimum for wall tiles per BS EN 12004.
  • Coverage per bag from the manufacturer's data sheet was used β€” not a generic value.
  • Adhesive bed thickness does not exceed the manufacturer's maximum β€” excess bed thickness causes bonding failure.
βœ“Application and Curing+
  • Adhesive pot life (open time) was confirmed β€” large format tile installation must be completed within the open time.
  • Adhesive was mixed to the correct consistency per the manufacturer's specification β€” no additional water was added.
  • Full curing time was observed before grouting β€” minimum 24 hours for standard adhesive, 48 hours in cold or wet conditions.
βœ“Wastage and Purchase+
  • Wastage of 10–15% was added to the calculated adhesive quantity for mixing residue, trowel waste, and bag variation.
  • The quantity including wastage was used for ordering.

  • Adhesive classification matches the application β€” C1 for standard dry areas, C2 for wet areas and large tiles, S1/S2 for deformable substrates.
  • Rapid-set adhesive is specified where early foot traffic or grouting is required β€” do not use standard adhesive and grout early.
  • Flexible adhesive (S1 or S2 classification) is specified for tiling over underfloor heating, timber substrates, or exterior applications.
  • White adhesive is specified under light-coloured, translucent, or natural stone tiles β€” grey adhesive shows through.
  • Epoxy adhesive is specified for chemical-resistant applications, food preparation areas, and pools.
  • Adhesive compatibility with the waterproofing membrane was confirmed with the manufacturer.

  • Coverage per bag from the manufacturer's data sheet was used β€” not a generic value.
  • The substrate flatness was confirmed before calculating adhesive bed thickness β€” an uneven substrate requires a thicker bed.
  • Adhesive was applied in one direction with a notched trowel to allow air release when the tile is pressed.
  • Tiles were beaten in firmly with a rubber mallet and checked with a straightedge across joints.
  • All adhesive bags were from the same production batch β€” mixing batches can cause colour and consistency variation.
  • Adhesive shelf life was checked β€” cement-based adhesive stored beyond 12 months in damp conditions loses strength.
  • Delivery charges and taxes were confirmed separately.
