  • Utility locate service called (811 or local equivalent) before any excavation for the driveway or its base
  • Positive drainage slope planned before finalizing grade (typically 1-2% minimum away from structures)

  • Wet or soft spots in the subgrade over-excavated and undercut (with extra aggregate backfill) before fabric placement, not just compacted as-is
  • Aggregate base graded with the same crown/slope as the intended finished asphalt surface, not left flat and corrected only in the asphalt lift

  • Aggregate base compacted in lifts (not dumped and left loose), typically to at least 95% of maximum dry density
  • Each asphalt lift compacted with a heavy roller WHILE STILL HOT, not left to cool before rolling
  • Tack coat applied evenly across the binder course BEFORE the surface course is placed, for two-lift construction
  • Delivered asphalt confirmed as genuine hot-mix from the plant, not a cold-mix product substituted for the primary surface
  • Delivered asphalt temperature spot-checked against the mix producer's target range before dumping, not assumed correct from the truck ticket alone
βœ“Tack Coat, Sealcoat & Maintenance+
  • First sealcoat application scheduled for at least 6-12 months after paving, not applied to freshly-installed asphalt
  • Ongoing sealcoat reapplication planned every 2-3 years (or per the product's specific instructions), not treated as a one-time application
  • Unsupported asphalt edges (with no curb or edging) confirmed backed by compacted soil or gravel shoulder, not left overhanging
  • Periodic maintenance (crack sealing, pothole repair, sealcoating) planned for, not treated as a one-time installation
  • Vehicle traffic restricted for the full initial cure period recommended by the paving contractor, not resumed as soon as the surface looks firm
