Wire Fence Calculator Formula: How Is It Determined?

Post, wire, and H-brace quantities calculated separately per USDA NRCS guidance, then combined into a material takeoff.

Step 1 — Line Posts & H-Brace Positions

Wire Run Length = Fence Length - Total Gate Width

Anchor Segments = Corners + Gates + 1

Intermediate Braces = (ceil(Average Segment / Interval) - 1) x Anchor Segments

Post Positions = max(2, ceil(Wire Run Length / Spacing) + 1) + 2 per gate + Corners + Intermediate Braces

H-Brace Units = 2 (run ends) + 2 per gate + Intermediate Braces + 2 per Corner (double-H, 3 posts each)

Line Posts = Total Positions - H-Brace Positions

Every run end and gate side gets one 2-post H-brace unit; each additional corner gets a full DOUBLE H-brace (2 rails, 2 diagonal-wire systems, but only 3 posts — the double-H shares its center corner post, per the USDA NRCS Arkansas drawing) since it changes wire direction; intermediate pull-braces on long runs stay a single 2-post unit. Corners and gates already anchor the run into shorter segments, so intermediate bracing is checked against the average segment length between anchors, not the full run, against a wire-type-specific interval (660 ft woven wire, 1,320 ft barbed wire, per NRCS Arkansas/Virginia) — a 2,640 ft woven-wire run split by 3 corners into four ~660 ft segments needs none. Post spacing is applied to the actual wire run (gate openings excluded).

Step 2 — Wire Quantity

Woven wire is one strand (a single panel) in fixed 330 ft rolls; barbed wire multiplies by strand count (2-5) in fixed 1,320 ft rolls — both confirmed manufacturer-standard roll lengths.

Step 3 — H-Brace Assembly (USDA Guidance)

The horizontal brace member and diagonal tension wire are sized from USDA's H-Brace construction fact sheet, using the FINISHED fence height (panel plus any active top strands, not the panel alone — a brace sized only to the panel would leave almost no post above 2 added top strands). A 7.5 ft floor keeps the brace rail from undersizing on short fences. An intermediate pull-brace carries tension from both directions along the same line and needs 2 diagonal-wire systems, not 1; a corner is a full double H-brace (2 rails, 2 systems, but 3 shared posts) since it changes direction. For barbed-wire fences, the main fence wire and the brace-tension wire are the same 1,320 ft product, so their footage is combined into one roll count instead of being rounded separately.
