Spray Foam Insulation Calculator (Open-Cell & Closed-Cell Kits, Board Feet & Cost)

Estimate spray foam kits, board feet, and cost from real board-feet math.

Inputs

Section 1: Area & Foam Type

Multiple Areas (attic + wall + rim joist combined)?

ℹ️Set to more than 1 if several identical areas share this same size.

Section 2: Wastage

ℹ️Use 10% for a simple, open, easily-reached area and 15% or more for a complex cavity, many obstructions, or a job where spray technique/overspray loss is likely.

Section 3: Kit Yield

Use a Different Kit Yield Than Standard?

Using standard kit sizes: 600 board feet (closed-cell), 1,350 board feet (open-cell). Switch this on to enter your actual product's own published yield instead.

Section 4: Cost

Quick Insight

Board feet (area x installed thickness) was computed directly, then 15% wastage was added on top — that's 1,267 bf extra beyond the raw geometric requirement.

Calculated from the board feet of foam needed to reach your target R-value at the chosen thickness, with 15% wastage added on top.

Spray foam insulation estimate

This page is pre-filled for a general 40 ft x 25 ft (1,000 sq ft) attic/roof deck at a target R-49 using closed-cell spray foam — that works out to a real board-feet figure (area x installed thickness), not a flat area-divided-by-coverage% shortcut.

This is a general-purpose starting point covering the most common spray foam attic/roof scenario. Change the area, foam type, target R-value, or wastage below and every result recalculates immediately.

  • Area: 1,000 sq ft.
  • Target: R-49.
  • Foam type: Closed-cell.
  • Wastage: 15%.

How the spray foam insulation calculation works

Each area is converted directly to board feet — a true volume measure — using the chosen foam type's R-value per inch, not a lookup chart.

Step 1 - Convert target R-value to installed thickness

Thickness (in) = Target R-Value / R-Per-Inch

R-Per-Inch = 3.6 (Open-Cell) or 5.8 (Closed-Cell)

Unlike blown-in loose-fill insulation, spray foam's R-value per inch is close to constant across its normal installed thickness range (confirmed via the SPFA's own published ranges), so this is a direct division rather than a chart interpolation. Both figures sit at the TRUE LOWER BOUND of the SPFA's own published range for each foam type (open-cell R3.6-4.5/in, closed-cell R5.8-6.9/in) — the conservative end, so the resulting thickness/board-feet estimate errs toward slightly more material, not a shortfall, versus a specific product elsewhere in the real range.

Step 2 - Convert thickness and area to board feet

Board Feet for an Area = Area (sq ft) x Thickness (in)

1 board foot = 1 sq ft of coverage at 1 in thickness

This is the exact definition every DIY spray foam kit is sold and labeled by (a "600 BF kit," a "1,350 BF kit") — a literal volume unit, not a brand-specific coverage chart.

Step 3 - Pool the board feet needed within each matching foam type

Foam Type Group Total = Sum of every area using the SAME foam type

Spray foam is a bulk, continuously-sprayed product with no discrete piece size — a kit opened for one area can finish spraying a different area of the SAME foam type with no "offcut" restriction. Every area using the same foam type pools its board feet together; open-cell and closed-cell are always totaled separately, since an open-cell kit's chemistry cannot yield closed-cell foam or vice versa.

Step 4 - Add wastage, then convert to whole kits exactly once per foam type group

Final Board Feet = Foam Type Group Total x (1 + Wastage / 100)

Final Kits (per foam type) = CEIL(That Group's Final Board Feet / Kit Yield)

Job Total = Sum of every foam type's own whole-kit count

Wastage is applied to each foam type group's own pooled board feet directly — this step itself is NOT rounded, only scaled. The whole-kit conversion is the only rounding, and it happens exactly once PER FOAM TYPE — not once per area, and not once across a combined open-cell + closed-cell total. This calculator defaults to a standard kit yield of 600 board feet for closed-cell and 1,350 board feet for open-cell; switch on "Use a Different Kit Yield Than Standard?" below the Wastage input to enter your actual product's own published theoretical yield instead (some kits marketed under a round number, like "600 BF," publish a lower real yield on their own technical data sheet).

Step 5 - Cost

Material Cost = Total Kits (all foam types) x Cost per Kit

Labor Cost = Total Area x Labor Rate per sq ft

Total Cost = Material Cost + Labor Cost

Material cost assumes the same price per kit across every foam type in the job — if your job spans both foam types with genuinely different real prices, estimate each foam type's cost separately.

Real-World Spray Foam Insulation Calculation Example

This example uses the active calculator inputs above and follows the same steps from the formula section.

Input Values Used

InputValueWhy it is used

Wastage15%Adds allowance on top of the board-feet requirement

Step 1 & 2 — Thickness & Board Feet

Board feet for this area1,000 sq ft x 8.45 in (shown rounded; the engine itself carries full precision through to the board-feet figure, so the two may not multiply out exactly on a calculator)8,448 bf
Total board feet needed (before wastage)Sum of the above8,448 bf

Step 3 & 4 — Final Board Feet & Kits

CalculationFormula / SubstitutionResult
Final board feet (incl. wastage)8,448 bf x (1 + 15/100)9,716 bf

Therefore, for this job you need 17 kit(s).

FAQ

It estimates whole kits of open-cell or closed-cell two-component spray foam for an attic/roof deck, wall, or rim-joist/floor area, plus optional material + labor cost, converting your target R-value directly to board feet — the real volume unit every DIY kit is sold by.
A board foot (1 sq ft at 1 in thickness) is the literal unit every spray foam kit label uses, and it scales perfectly linearly with thickness — this calculator computes board feet directly from your area and target thickness instead of assuming one fixed 'coverage at one depth' number.
