Sheathing Calculator Formula: How Is It Determined?
Net area, panel count, and an approximate nail count, calculated separately and combined into a material takeoff.
Step 1 — Net Area to Cover
Wall: Net Area = (Wall Length × Wall Height) − Σ(Opening Width × Height × Count)
Roof: Run = (Gable: Span ÷ 2 | Shed: Span) + Eave Overhang
Roof: Slope Length = Run ÷ cos(arctan(Pitch ÷ 12))
Roof: Effective Length = Building Length + 2 × Rake/Gable-End Overhang
Roof: Net Area = Slope Length × Effective Length × (Gable: 2 | Shed: 1)
Wall area is straightforward gross-minus-openings. Roof area uses the same run/rise trigonometry as this site's Rafter Calculator — the sloped surface is always larger than the flat building footprint, and more so at steeper pitches. Eave overhang (perpendicular to the ridge) and rake/gable-end overhang (parallel to the ridge, at each gable end) are two separate dimensions that both add real area — entering only one and leaving the other at zero will under-order panels for a roof that actually has both.

Panels to Cover Area = Net Area ÷ Panel Coverage Area
Total Panels = ceil(Panels to Cover Area × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100))
