How the septic tank size calculation works

Step 1 - Calculate daily wastewater flow

Daily Flow = Number of Users x Wastewater per Person per Day

This estimates the wastewater entering the septic tank each day.

Step 2 - Calculate liquid retention volume

Liquid Retention Volume = Daily Flow x Retention Time in Days

Retention time is entered in hours and converted to days. A 24-hour retention time equals 1 day.

Step 3 - Add sludge storage

Sludge Storage = Number of Users x Sludge Storage per Person
Working Volume = Liquid Retention Volume + Sludge Storage

Step 4 - Apply safety factor and round up

Design Volume = Working Volume x (1 + Safety Factor / 100)
Practical Capacity = Design Volume rounded up

Step 5 - Calculate suggested dimensions

Rectangular Plan Area = Practical Capacity / Liquid Depth
Width = sqrt(Plan Area / Length:Width Ratio)
Length = Width x Length:Width Ratio

For cylindrical tanks, the calculator uses volume and liquid depth to estimate diameter. Total internal height equals liquid depth plus freeboard.
