Pond/Water-Feature Volume Calculator (Volume, Liner Size & Pump GPH)

Find your pond's volume, liner size, and pump GPH instantly.

Inputs

ℹ️Rectangular and Circular use exact geometric volume; Oval uses the exact ellipse-area formula; Irregular/Kidney uses a disclosed mid-range approximation, since no exact formula exists for a freeform shape.

ℹ️The true AVERAGE depth across the whole basin, not the deepest point — sloped walls mean average depth is genuinely shallower than max depth. Liner sizing separately uses your pond's maximum depth below.

ℹ️The depth at your pond's single DEEPEST point — used only for liner sizing, since the liner has to physically reach the bottom and back up. Must be at least the average depth above (equal for straight, vertical-walled ponds).

Marginal Shelf Zone

Include a Marginal Shelf?

A shallow planting ledge around the perimeter, at its own shallower depth — its footprint is subtracted from the main basin, not added on top.

Pond Liner

ℹ️Extra material left at the edge for anchoring/trimming — 2 ft is a commonly-cited standard, adjustable here.

Pump / Filtration

ℹ️Drives both the pump turnover-rate target and which fish-stocking guideline (volume-based or surface-area-based) is shown.

Include a Waterfall / Spillway?

What Is a Pond/Water-Feature Volume Calculator?

A Pond/Water-Feature Volume Calculator finds your garden pond's water volume, the liner size you need to buy, a recommended pump GPH, and a fish-stocking guideline — all from your pond's shape, dimensions, and average water depth. It supports four shapes with genuinely different math: Rectangular/Square and Circular (exact geometric volume), Oval/Elliptical (the exact ellipse-area formula), and Irregular/Kidney-Shaped (a disclosed mid-range approximation, since no exact formula exists for a freeform outline).

It also models an optional marginal shelf zone — a shallow planting ledge around the perimeter at its own shallower depth, correctly subtracted from the main basin's footprint rather than added on top — and sizes a pond liner using the standard length/width-plus-depth-plus-overlap industry formula, a pump from a stocking-based turnover-rate target (with an optional waterfall/spillway add-on), and a fish-stocking guideline that switches between a volume-based rule (goldfish) and a surface-area-based rule (koi).

What this calculator does not do:

  • It computes volume, liner, pump, and stocking ESTIMATES only — it does not verify excavation depth/stability, electrical safety for pump/lighting circuits, structural support for a raised or elevated pond, or local permitting requirements
  • Fish stocking figures are general planning guidelines, not a guarantee of safe stocking — filtration quality, aeration, and the fish's eventual mature size all matter and aren't evaluated here

Pond Calculator Formula: How Is It Determined?

Your pond's shape, dimensions, and average depth combine into a volume figure, which then drives liner sizing, pump GPH, and a fish-stocking guideline.

Step 1 — Volume by Shape

Rectangular/Square: Volume = Length x Width x Average Depth

Circular: Volume = pi x (Diameter/2)^2 x Average Depth

Oval/Elliptical: Volume = (pi/4) x Length x Width x Average Depth

Irregular/Kidney: Volume = Length x Width x Average Depth x 0.75 (disclosed mid-range estimate)

Rectangular, Circular, and Oval use exact geometric formulas; Irregular/Kidney uses a disclosed approximation since a freeform outline has no exact formula — break a highly irregular pond into rectangular sub-sections and sum them for a more accurate figure.

Step 2 — Marginal Shelf Zone (optional)

Main Basin Footprint = Footprint of the same shape, shrunk by (2 x Shelf Width)

e.g. Rectangular: (Length − 2 x Shelf Width) x (Width − 2 x Shelf Width)

e.g. Circular: pi x ((Diameter/2) − Shelf Width)^2

Shelf Footprint = Total Footprint − Main Basin Footprint

Total Volume = (Main Basin Footprint x Main Depth) + (Shelf Footprint x Shelf Depth)

The shelf's footprint is subtracted from the main basin — it occupies space that would otherwise be full-depth basin, not additional pond area. The shelf band is measured as the pond's own footprint minus the shrunk inner basin, rather than simply perimeter x shelf width, because that shortcut double-counts the corners where the band meets itself (a 12 x 8 ft pond with a 1 ft shelf is 36 sq ft of shelf, not the 40 sq ft the perimeter shortcut gives).

Step 3 — Liner Size

Liner Length = Bounding Length + (2 x Maximum Depth) + Overlap Allowance

Liner Width = Bounding Width + (2 x Maximum Depth) + Overlap Allowance

Uses the pond's MAXIMUM depth (deepest point, main basin or shelf), not average depth — the liner has to physically reach down and back up. A small purchase waste allowance is added on top; underlayment reuses the same purchase area.

Step 4 — Pump GPH

Minimum GPH = Volume (gal) x Turnover Rate (0.5x-2.0x/hr by pond type)

Recommended Rated GPH = Minimum GPH x 1.5

Waterfall (optional): + Spillway Width (in) x GPH per inch (100 light / 200 heavy)

Turnover rate scales with stocking level; the 1.5x factor accounts for head-height/pipe-friction losses between a pump's printed rating and its real delivered flow. A waterfall adds its own GPH on top, reported as a separate line item.

Step 5 — Fish Stocking Guideline

Goldfish/general (volume-based): Max Fish Inches = Volume (gal) / 10

Koi (surface-based): Max Fish Inches = Surface Area (sq ft) / 1

A general planning guideline only — only the rule matching your selected pond type is shown.

Step 6 — Cost

Line Cost = Purchase Quantity (sq ft/estimate) x Unit Price

Total = Liner + Underlayment + Pump

Every cost line is priced off the actual purchase quantity, and every cost field is zero unless cost estimation is enabled.

Worked Example

This example walks through your current inputs above, using the same steps as the Formula section.

Input Values Used

InputValue
Pond Size12 x 8 ft, avg depth 2 ft, max depth 3 ft
ShapeRectangular / Square
Pond TypeGoldfish Pond — Lightly Stocked

Step 1 — Volume

CalculationResult
96 sq ft surface x depth192 cu ft (1436 US gal)

Step 3 — Liner Size

CalculationResult
12 + (2 x 3) + 2 ft overlap20 x 16 ft (342.4 sq ft to buy)

Step 4 — Pump GPH

CalculationResult

Figures above are rounded for display; the real quantities are always calculated from full, unrounded values.

Therefore, a 96 sq ft rectangular pond at 2 ft average depth holds 1436 US gal (5437 L), needs a 20 x 16 ft liner, and a pump rated at least 2,154 GPH.

When should you use this pond calculator?

  • Planning a new garden pond and wanting to know its water volume in gallons/litres before excavating.
  • Sizing a pond liner before ordering — cutting a liner too small can't be fixed after excavation is complete.
  • Choosing the right pump for a Water Garden, Goldfish, or Koi pond, including an optional waterfall or spillway feature.
  • Comparing Rectangular, Circular, Oval, or Irregular/Kidney pond shapes for the same general footprint.
  • Adding a marginal planting shelf and understanding how it affects total volume and liner depth requirements.
  • Getting a general fish-stocking guideline before deciding how many goldfish or koi a planned pond can reasonably support.

Quick Pond Installation Tips

  • Measure average depth by taking several depth readings across the basin and averaging them, not just the single deepest point.
  • Order slightly more liner and underlayment than the bare minimum figure — this calculator's purchase area already includes a waste allowance, but an unusually shaped excavation can still eat into that margin.
  • Check a pump's own head-height flow chart against your installation's actual vertical lift and tubing run — a pump's printed GPH is measured at zero head, and real delivered flow drops as head height increases.
  • For a highly irregular or multi-lobed pond outline, run this calculator once per rectangular sub-section and sum the results for a more accurate volume than the single Irregular/Kidney multiplier.
  • Let a new pond cycle (establish beneficial bacteria) and dechlorinate the water before adding fish.
  • If overwintering fish in a cold climate, plan for a deeper section below the local frost line — separate from the average-depth figure used for volume sizing here.

Common Mistakes

  • Entering the pond's MAXIMUM depth instead of its true average depth for the volume calculation — this overstates volume, pump GPH, and fish-stocking capacity, since sloped pond walls make average depth genuinely shallower than the deepest point.
  • Sizing a pump to the base turnover GPH while forgetting to add a planned waterfall's own GPH — leaving the waterfall running weaker than intended or starving the main filtration circuit.
  • Treating a pump's printed box GPH rating as its real delivered flow at your installation's actual head height and tubing run — real output is commonly well below the zero-resistance box rating.
  • Cutting a liner to the bare calculated minimum with no overlap allowance — leaving no material to anchor the edge once the liner has settled under the water's weight.
  • Treating the fish-stocking figure as a hard limit rather than a general guideline — real safe stocking also depends on filtration capacity, aeration, and the fish's eventual mature size.
  • Adding the marginal shelf's volume on top of an unchanged main basin instead of subtracting its footprint first — this calculator does the subtraction correctly, but a manual estimate that skips this step will overstate total volume.

Limitations

  • The Irregular/Kidney shape's volume is a disclosed mid-range approximation (0.75x the bounding rectangle) — real sources range roughly 0.45-0.9x depending on how convoluted the actual outline is. For a materially more accurate figure, break the pond into rectangular sub-sections and sum the results.
  • For Oval and Irregular shapes, the liner is sized using the entered length/width as a bounding rectangle (standard supplier guidance for non-rectangular ponds) — this is an intentionally conservative (oversized) estimate, not an exact fit to the pond's real outline.
  • Fish-stocking figures are general planning guidelines only, not a guarantee of safe stocking — filtration capacity, aeration, water quality maintenance, and the fish's eventual mature size all affect real capacity and aren't evaluated here.
  • Does not verify excavation stability, electrical safety for pump/lighting circuits, structural support for a raised or elevated pond, or local permitting requirements.
  • Pump GPH figures are sizing targets only — always check a specific pump model's own manufacturer flow chart at your installation's actual head height and tubing run before purchasing.
  • Does not model cold-climate overwintering depth requirements (a deeper section below the local frost line) separately from the average-depth figure used for volume sizing.

FAQ

Rectangular/Square ponds use exact box volume (length x width x average depth). Circular ponds use exact cylinder volume (pi x radius squared x average depth). Oval/Elliptical ponds use the exact ellipse-area formula (pi/4 x length x width x average depth — the same identity as pi x semi-major x semi-minor axis). Irregular/Kidney-shaped ponds have no exact formula for a freeform outline, so this calculator applies a disclosed mid-range multiplier (0.75x the bounding rectangle's own box volume) — for a more accurate figure on a highly irregular shape, break the pond into rectangular sub-sections and sum the results.
Both — this calculator has two separate depth fields rather than assuming a slope-based conversion factor between them, since sloped pond walls mean average depth is genuinely shallower than the deepest point, and there's no single reliable ratio between the two across different pond designs. Average Water Depth drives the volume calculation; Maximum Water Depth (the deepest point) is used only for liner sizing, since that's the dimension the liner material actually has to reach down and back up. For a pond with straight, vertical walls, the two can be the same number — for a sloped-wall pond, maximum depth should be entered as genuinely deeper.
