How the pipe volume calculation works

The calculator first converts the entered units, then calculates the internal cross-sectional area and multiplies it by pipe length. If multiple pipes are entered, it multiplies the single-pipe volume by quantity.

Step 1 - Determine internal diameter

ID mode: Internal Diameter = entered ID
OD mode: Internal Diameter = Outer Diameter - 2 x Wall Thickness

Inner diameter mode is best for fluid capacity. Outer diameter mode is useful when you also need pipe material volume.

Step 2 - Calculate internal volume

Pipe Volume = pi x ID x ID / 4 x Length

The result is first calculated in cubic meters, then converted to liters for practical plumbing use.

Step 2b - Partial fill for horizontal pipes (optional)

For a horizontal pipe that is not completely full, the fluid sits in the bottom of the bore up to a liquid height, forming a circular segment rather than the full circle. The calculator uses the standard circular-segment area formula, with the segment boundary being a flat horizontal line at the entered liquid height:

Segment Area = r² x acos((r − h) / r) − (r − h) x sqrt(2rh − h²)
Current Volume = Segment Area x Length

Here r is the pipe's inner radius and h is the liquid height measured from the bottom of the bore (0 = empty, full inner diameter = completely full). Fill percentage is the segment area divided by the full-bore area. The full-bore volume is still shown for reference, and fluid weight, insight, and (when a flow rate is entered) top-up time are all based on this current wetted volume rather than the full capacity.

Step 3 - Calculate bulk quantity and weight

Total Volume = Single Pipe Volume x Number of Pipes
Fluid Weight = Total Volume x Density

This makes the calculator useful for bulk estimation, handling loads, and checking filling or draining quantities.

Step 4 - Calculate material volume in OD mode

Material Volume = pi / 4 x (OD x OD - ID x ID) x Length

Material volume gives a practical estimate of the actual pipe body, which is helpful for procurement, BOQ checks, and comparing different wall thicknesses.

Step 5 - Estimate fill time (optional)

Fill Time (minutes) = Total Volume in Liters / Inlet Flow Rate (L/min)

When an inlet flow rate is entered, the calculator divides the total internal volume in liters by the flow rate to estimate how long it takes to fill this pipe run — useful when charging a new line or testing a system.

The flow rate can be entered in L/min, US GPM, m³/hr, or L/s — whichever unit is selected is converted to L/min internally (1 GPM = 3.785412 L/min, 1 m³/hr = 16.6667 L/min, 1 L/s = 60 L/min) before the fill-time formula above is applied.

With Partial Fill selected, "Total Volume in Liters" in the formula above is replaced by the remaining (currently empty) volume — Full-Bore Volume minus Current Volume — since the natural question once a pipe already has some fluid in it is how long it takes to top up the rest, not to fill completely from empty.
