Inputs
ℹ️L-Shaped models a main run plus a second connected section — an apron, turn, or widened area — as two rectangles added together.
ℹ️Distance from the street/curb to the garage or parking area.
ℹ️Single-car driveways are typically 10-12 ft wide; double-car driveways are typically 20-24 ft.
Aggregate Base
ℹ️8 in is standard for residential driveways; go to 10 in for soft/clay soil or heavy vehicles. 6 in is CMHA's minimum, only on well-drained soil.
ℹ️Standard dump trucks carry around 10-12 tons per load. Applies to the aggregate base, always bulk-delivered.
Bedding Sand
ℹ️1 in is the standard bedding thickness — deeper loose sand can shift and settle unevenly.
ℹ️Bulk delivery is standard; bagged is only practical for a small area or patch.
Pavers
ℹ️60mm is OK for standard residential driveways (product-dependent); 80mm is preferred/required for heavier vehicular loads. 30mm is overlay-only, not rated for any vehicle.
ℹ️Running bond has the lowest cutting waste and works with any paver shape; herringbone and basket weave are designed for roughly 2:1 rectangular pavers.
Joint Sand
ℹ️Joint depth is set to your paver thickness — joints are filled to the full depth of the paver.
Geotextile Fabric & Edge Restraint
Standard practice between subgrade and base — prevents soil migration into the base and reduces long-term rutting.
Edge restraint is required for an interlocking paver driveway to perform correctly — pick "No" only if a suitable restraint already exists or will be quoted separately, not to skip it from the actual build.
ℹ️Steel/aluminum holds curves and lasts longest; plastic is cheapest but a lower-durability option under vehicle contact.

Assumptions Used
Standard US residential paver driveway, rectangular or L-shaped, built as an aggregate base, a screeded bedding sand layer, interlocking pavers, and swept-in joint sand — with edge restraint required around the perimeter to keep the system from spreading under vehicle loads. The aggregate base weight uses a 15% compaction allowance and 8% waste, matching the site's general gravel-weight calculator; bedding sand carries only a 10% screeding/leveling waste allowance since it is installed loose, not compacted. Paver count and cost are based on the order area (footprint plus your chosen layout pattern's cut waste). Joint sand quantity is derived from the actual joint geometry (paver size, joint width, and paver thickness as joint depth), plus a 12% allowance for the repeated dry fill-and-compact passes needed to fully pack every joint before water activation. Geotextile fabric area includes a 10% overlap allowance for seams; standard roll size is 12.5 × 360 ft. Edging length sums each section's own full perimeter — for L-shaped mode this is a conservative over-estimate. This calculator computes material quantities only — it does not verify subgrade compaction adequacy, local drainage requirements, or structural design for unusual soil or loading conditions.

Paver driveway with geotextile fabric
Geotextile fabric laid between the subgrade and aggregate base is standard, widely-recommended practice — it prevents the base stone from migrating into the soil below over time, which otherwise gradually weakens the driveway's structure.
This page defaults to a 20 ft × 12 ft driveway with fabric included, factoring in a 10% overlap allowance for seams — edit the inputs above to match your actual layout.
Paver Driveway Calculator Formula: How Is It Determined?
Each layer is calculated using its own real construction logic, then combined into one material takeoff.
Step 1 — Aggregate Base
Volume = Area x Base Depth
Weight = Volume x (1 + 15% compaction) x Material Density x (1 + 8% waste)
The base is compacted in lifts before the bedding sand goes down, so it gets the same 15% compaction and 8% waste allowances used across the site's driveway calculators.
Step 2 — Bedding Sand
Volume = Area x Bedding Sand Depth
Weight (or Bags) = Volume x (1 + 10% screeding waste)
No compaction allowance — bedding sand is screeded level and left loose; the pavers themselves plus a final compactor pass on the finished surface consolidate it, not a pre-compaction step.
Step 3 — Pavers
Order Area = Driveway Area x (1 + Pattern Waste %)
Pavers = ceil(Order Area / Paver Unit Area)
Pattern waste ranges from about 5% (running bond) to about 13% (45° herringbone), reflecting how much border-cut offcut each pattern actually produces.
Step 4 — Joint Sand
Joint Volume per sq ft = 144 x (1/Paver Width + 1/Paver Length) x Joint Width x Joint Depth
Bags = ceil(Total Joint Volume x (1 + 12% sweep-in) / Bag Yield)
Derived from the actual joint geometry at your paver size, using the installed footprint (not the paver order area, since cut offcuts don't create extra joints). Joint depth is set to your paver thickness.
Step 5 — Fabric & Edge Restraint
Fabric Rolls = ceil(Area x (1 + 10% overlap) / Roll Area)
Edge Restraint Length = Sum of each section's own 2 x (Length + Width)
Fabric is priced per whole roll actually purchased. Edge restraint is required for this calculator's driveway type, and for L-shaped mode sums both sections' full perimeters as a conservative over-estimate.
Worked Example
This example walks through your current inputs above, using the same steps as the Formula section.
Input Values Used
| Input | Value | Why it is used |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | 20 ft / 12 ft | Sets area for every layer |
| Layers | 12.2" total (8" base + 1" bedding sand + 3.15" paver) | Sets volume and weight per layer |
| Paver / Pattern | 4 x 8 in (Standard Brick), Running Bond (Stretcher) — lowest waste | Sets order area, paver count, and joint geometry |
Step 1 — Aggregate Base
| Calculation | Result |
|---|---|
| Volume = 240 sq ft x (8/12) ft | 160 cu ft (5.93 cu yd) |
| Weight = Volume x (1 + 15%) x density x (1 + 8%) | 11.475 tons |
| Truck loads = ceil(11.475 / 10) | 2 loads |
Step 2 — Bedding Sand
| Calculation | Result |
|---|---|
| Volume = 240 sq ft x (1/12) ft | 20 cu ft (0.74 cu yd) |
| Weight = Volume x (1 + 10%) x density | 1.236 tons |
Step 3 — Pavers
| Calculation | Result |
|---|---|
| Order Area = 240 sq ft x (1 + 5%) | 252 sq ft |
| Pavers = ceil(Order Area / 0.2222 sq ft per paver) | 1134 pavers |
Step 4 — Joint Sand
| Calculation | Result |
|---|---|
| Joint volume (0.125" wide x 3.15" deep) | 2.95 cu ft |
| Bags = ceil(Volume x (1 + 12%) / 0.5 cu ft per bag) | 7 bags |
Step 5 — Fabric & Edge Restraint
| Calculation | Result |
|---|---|
| Fabric order area = 240 x (1 + 10%) | 264 sq ft (1 rolls) |
| Edge restraint perimeter | 64 linear ft |
Therefore, this 20 ft x 12 ft paver driveway needs approximately 1134 pavers and 12.711 tons of bulk aggregate base, 7 bags of joint sand, 1 roll(s) of geotextile fabric, and 64 linear ft of edge restraint.
