Vinyl Gate Calculator (Frame, Aluminum Insert & Cable Brace)

Size your vinyl gate instantly.

Inputs

ℹ️Wood/Vinyl use a built frame + infill; Aluminum is priced as a pre-fab panel; Chain-Link uses a welded tube frame + fabric.

Gate Configuration
ft

ℹ️The gate leaf's own finished width — NOT the post-to-post frame opening, which needs to run wider for hinge/latch hardware and swing clearance. See the Recommended Frame Opening in your results.

ft

ℹ️How many identical gate openings — e.g. 2 side-yard gates of the same size.

A gate post carries real swing load — concrete is far more common here than for a tamped line post.

Vinyl gate material takeoff

A vinyl gate frame is reinforced with an aluminum insert running the full frame perimeter inside the vinyl channel, plus a diagonal turnbuckle cable (not a solid brace) to prevent sag — genuinely different anti-sag hardware than a wood gate's Z-brace.

This page defaults to a vinyl frame — edit the inputs above to match your actual finished width and height.

Fence Gate Calculator Formula: How Is It Determined?

Frame, reinforcement, infill, hardware, and gate post quantities are calculated per frame material, then combined into one material takeoff.

Step 1 — Leaf Dimensions & Frame Opening

Leaf Count = 2 (Double) or 1 (Single)

Leaf Width = Finished Leaf Width / Leaf Count

Recommended Frame Opening = Finished Leaf Width + 3.75 in (Single) or 5.5 in (Double)

The width you enter is the gate LEAF's own finished width, not the post-to-post frame opening — a double gate splits it evenly between its 2 leaves, and every downstream quantity (frame, hinges, brace) is sized per leaf. Per the CLFMI installation guide, the actual frame opening between posts needs to run wider than the leaf width alone to clear hinge/latch hardware and leaf swing — 3.75 in wider for a single gate, 5.5 in wider for a double gate.

Step 2 — Frame & Reinforcement (per material)

Wood: Frame = 2 x Height + (2 or 3) x Leaf Width; Brace = sqrt(Leaf Width² + Height²)

Vinyl: Frame = 2 x Height + 2 x Leaf Width; Aluminum Insert = same length as Frame

Aluminum: Panel Count = Leaf Count x Gate Count (pre-fab, not a linear-footage takeoff)

Chain-Link: Frame = 2 x (Leaf Width + Height); Fabric = Leaf Width x Height

Wood uses a 3rd mid-rail past a 5 ft gate height to resist racking. Aluminum is priced as a pre-welded panel purchase per leaf, matching how the product is actually sold, rather than a raw-material frame takeoff. Waste factor applies to frame/reinforcement/infill quantities (bought and cut from stock), not to hardware or post counts.

Step 3 — Hardware & Gate Posts

Hinges per Leaf = 3 if Leaf Width > 4 ft (Wood/Vinyl only), else 2

Gate Posts = 2 x Number of Gate Openings (double gate: still 2, via drop rod)

Buried Depth = Gate Height / 2 + 0.5 ft (gate-post upsizing margin)

Footing Hole Diameter = Post Width/OD x 3 (Wood/Vinyl) or x 4 (Chain-Link, per CLFMI)

A double gate's 2 leaves meet at a drop rod (on one leaf) and ground sleeve, so only 2 gate posts are needed total — not a shared center post. Gate posts are sized one nominal size up from a standard line post and buried 6 in deeper than the fence line-post rule, since a gate post alone carries the leaf's full weight and swing torque. Chain-link gate/terminal posts use the CLFMI installation guide's own larger footing-diameter minimum (4x the post OD) rather than the generic 3x rule used for wood/vinyl posts.

Worked Example

This example walks through your current inputs above, using the same steps as the Formula section.

Input Values Used

InputValueWhy it is used
Material / configurationVinyl / Single leafSelects the frame/reinforcement/infill formulas
Opening width / height4 ft / 6 ftSets leaf width (4 ft/leaf) and all downstream quantities
Gate posts5x5, concretedSets post length and footing

Step 1 — Leaf Dimensions

CalculationResult
Leaf count1
Leaf width = 4 ft / 14 ft
Total leaves (leaf count x 1 gate opening(s))1
Recommended frame opening = 4 ft + 3.75 in4.313 ft

Step 2 — Frame, Reinforcement & Infill

CalculationResult
Frame material, including 10% waste22 ft
Reinforcement (brace / insert)22 ft
Infill (pickets/panels)1

Step 3 — Hardware & Gate Posts

CalculationResult
Hinges (1 leaf(ves))2
Latches1
Gate posts = 2 x 1 opening(s)2
Concrete (7.375 cu ft total)17 bags (60 lb)

Therefore, this 4 ft x 6 ft Vinyl gate needs approximately 22 ft of frame material, 2 hinges, and 2 gate posts, plus 17 bags of concrete.

FAQ

Vinyl alone isn't rigid enough to hold a gate frame's shape under its own weight — the aluminum insert inside each frame channel is what actually gives the frame its structural rigidity.
A diagonal turnbuckle cable, tensioned after installation, pulls the frame back into square — it can be re-tightened over time, unlike a fixed wood Z-brace.
