Simplified velocity-based sizing — not a Manual D duct design. This calculator sizes duct diameter using a simplified velocity-only method — its velocity targets are common planning limits informed by ACCA Manual D guidance, not the full Manual D equal-friction duct-sizing procedure, which sizes ducts from design airflow, friction rate, duct material/roughness, and total system static pressure. It does not account for duct length, fitting/elbow friction loss, total effective length, or your system's available static pressure budget. Get a full Manual D duct design from a licensed HVAC contractor before fabrication or installation.

Branch duct sizing

A branch run carries one room's share of the total system airflow off the trunk — since branches serve occupied rooms directly, they target a slower recommended velocity (600 FPM) than a trunk, for quieter operation.

This page defaults to a 150 CFM branch (a typical single-bedroom share) — edit the CFM above to match that room's actual load.

Duct Size Calculator Formula: How Is It Determined?

Each run is sized independently from its own CFM and duct category, then rounded up to a standard stock size.

Step 1 — Required Area at Target Velocity

Required Area (sq ft) = Run CFM ÷ Target Velocity (FPM)

Target velocity is the selected duct category's recommended (not maximum) planning limit, informed by common ACCA Manual D velocity guidance — Supply Trunk 700 FPM, Supply Branch 600 FPM, Return Trunk 600 FPM, Return Branch 400 FPM. This is a velocity-only shortcut, not the full Manual D method, which also uses design airflow, friction rate, duct properties, and total system resistance.

Step 2 — Raw Diameter

Raw Diameter (in) = √(4 x Required Area ÷ π) x 12

This converts the required round cross-sectional area into an exact diameter in inches — before rounding to a stock size.

Step 3 — Nominal Size & Actual Velocity

Nominal Diameter = next standard size ≥ Raw Diameter, up to 24 in

Actual Velocity = Run CFM ÷ Area(Nominal Diameter)

The raw diameter always rounds UP to the next standard round duct size (4 through 24 in) — sizing down would run faster than the target velocity. The actual velocity at that standard size is shown for transparency, and is usually a little under the target since sizes snap up in whole-inch steps. A run whose raw diameter exceeds 24 in is flagged, not capped.

Worked Example

This example walks through your current inputs above, using the same steps as the Formula section.

Step 1 — Required Area per Run

Required area = run CFM ÷ that duct category's target velocity.

Therefore, this 1-run duct system sizes to the standard diameters shown above, each achieving a velocity at or under its category's recommended target. FAQ

That room's own share of total system CFM, ideally from a room-by-room Manual J load calculation — a rough rule of thumb is total system CFM divided by number of rooms, but actual room loads vary.
A branch carries only one room's airflow share, while the trunk carries the combined airflow for every room it feeds — lower CFM alone would size it smaller, and the slower branch velocity target narrows the gap only slightly.
