Drywall Cost Calculator (Sheets, Screws, Tape & Cost)
Estimate drywall sheets, screws, tape, mud, and cost.

Inputs
Section 1: Room Dimensions
ℹ️A standard residential ceiling is about 8-9 ft (2.4-2.7 m).
ℹ️Set to more than 1 if several identical rooms share this same size.
ℹ️Only for a garage door or wide sliding door that removes most of one wall's width — standard doors and windows are not deducted.
ℹ️Required whenever a large opening width is set — any wall above the opening (a lintel strip) still needs sheets unless the opening runs full floor-to-ceiling.
Section 2: Sheet Details
ℹ️Width is almost always 4 ft (1220 mm) for US/Canada drywall, or 1200 mm for UK/Australian plasterboard — length varies by how much continuous run you need.
ℹ️Changes only the estimated material weight — sheet count depends on the length and width above, not thickness.
ℹ️Auto checks both directions for every wall/ceiling and keeps whichever needs fewer sheets geometrically — it does not know your joist spacing or direction. Many codes and manufacturer span tables require a specific orientation regardless of sheet count, especially on ceilings; confirm that separately.
ℹ️Use 5-10% for simple rooms and 10-15% for rooms with more cutouts or complex layouts.
ℹ️32 per 4x8 sheet is typical for standard 16 in on-center framing.
Section 3: Cost
ℹ️Enter values in the currency selected above. Results use the same currency.
ℹ️Labor is calculated per square meter of installed wall/ceiling area.

Quick Insight
Each wall was packed into whole sheets independently, then 10% wastage was added on top — that's 2 extra sheet(s) beyond the 12 geometrically required.
Calculated by packing each wall into whole sheets (orientation: auto), then adding 10% wastage.

Drywall cost estimate
This page keeps total cost as the headline number — the same 12 ft x 10 ft room with an 8 ft ceiling needs a packed sheet count, which at a sample rate of 15 per sheet plus labor comes to a combined material and labor estimate.
Cost estimation runs alongside the same sheet-packing math used on every other page — enter your own sheet cost and labor rate to replace these sample figures with real local pricing.
How the drywall sheet calculation works
Each wall is packed independently into a grid of whole sheets, rather than dividing one combined area by one sheet's area.
Step 1 - Pack each wall into whole sheets
Rows = CEIL(Ceiling Height / Sheet Edge Along Height)
Columns = CEIL(Wall Run / Sheet Edge Along Run)
Sheets for that Wall = Rows x Columns
"Auto" orientation computes this for both hanging directions (long edge up the wall vs. along it) on every wall and keeps whichever needs fewer sheets.
Step 2 - Sum every wall (and the ceiling, if included)
Wall Sheets = 2 x Width-Wall Sheets + Length-Wall Sheets + Opening-Reduced Length-Wall Sheets + Lintel-Strip Sheets
Ceiling Sheets = Rows x Columns, best-fit orientation
Raw Sheets = Wall Sheets + Ceiling Sheets
A large opening (garage door, wide slider) shortens only the one length-wall it sits on, by its own width and height — any wall area above it (a lintel strip) is packed separately and still counted, unless the opening runs full floor-to-ceiling. A standard door or window is not deducted at all.
Step 3 - Add wastage
Final Sheets = CEIL(Raw Sheets x (1 + Wastage / 100))
Wastage is a buffer on top of the already-whole packed count, covering cuts around outlets and breakage — not a substitute for packing each wall.
Step 4 - Derive screws, tape, mud, weight, and cost
Screws = Final Sheets x Screws per Sheet
Joint Tape = CEIL((Panel Seams + Inside Corners + Ceiling Angle) / 76.2 m per roll)
Joint Compound = CEIL(Installed Area / 46.5 m² per bucket)
Material Weight = Final Sheets x Sheet Area x Weight per m²
Total Cost = Sheet Cost + Labor Cost
Joint tape length comes from the interior seams the packing grid implies, plus the room's inside wall corners and (when the ceiling is included) the wall-to-ceiling angle — not a separate flat-rate guess.
Real-World Drywall Sheet Calculation Example
This example uses the active calculator inputs above and follows the same steps from the formula section.
Input Values Used
| Input | Value | Why it is used |
|---|---|---|
| Rooms | 1 room(s) | Determines how many wall grids are packed |
| Sheet Size | 2.44 m x 1.22 m | Sets the grid cell size used for packing |
| Orientation | auto | Decides which edge of the sheet runs up vs. along the wall |
| Wastage | 10% | Adds allowance on top of the packed sheet count |
Step 1 & 2 — Sheet Packing
| Calculation | Formula / Substitution | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Wall sheets | Each wall packed independently x 1 room(s) | 12 sheets |
| Raw sheets (before wastage) | Sum of the above | 12 sheets |
Step 3 — Final Sheets
| Calculation | Formula / Substitution | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Final sheets (incl. wastage) | ROUND UP(12 x (1 + 10/100)) | 14 sheets |
Step 4 — Screws, Tape, Mud & Weight
| Calculation | Formula / Substitution | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Screws | 14 sheets x screws/sheet | 448 pcs |
| Joint tape | 29.3 m seams / 76.2 m roll | 1 roll(s) |
| Joint compound | 32.7 m² / 46.5 m² bucket | 1 bucket(s) |
| Material weight | 14 sheets x 2.97 m² x weight/m² | 325 kg |
Step 5 — Cost
| Calculation | Formula / Substitution | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Sheet cost | 14 x $15 | $210 |
| Labor cost | 32.7 m² x $12 | $392 |
| Total estimated cost | Sheet + labor | $602 |
Therefore, for this job you need 14 sheets, about 448 screws, 1 roll(s) of joint tape, and 1 bucket(s) of joint compound, for an estimated cost of $602.
