Horizontal Fixture Branch and Stack capacity use IPC Table 710.1(2) (fixed by diameter, and by branch-interval count for stacks — not slope-dependent). These are different tables answering different sizing questions for different pipe segments.
The minimum size of any building drain serving a water closet is 3 inches, regardless of DFU load. Confirm the exact table and slope requirements adopted by your local jurisdiction (IPC, UPC, or a local amendment) before finalizing a design.

How Drain Pipe Slope Is Calculated
The calculation happens in four parts — slope/fall geometry, a code-minimum slope check, a DFU capacity lookup for the selected line role, and utilization against your actual DFU load.
Step 1 — Slope ↔ Fall Conversion
Slope (in/ft) = Available Fall (in) ÷ Run Length (ft)
Both directions are pure geometry — this section accepts any slope or fall value, not just the four code-tabulated slopes used in Step 3. In metric mode the same math runs in mm/m and meters, converted at the boundary (1/4 in/ft ≈ 20.8 mm/m). This step doesn't apply to a Stack, which is vertical and has no slope.
Step 2 — Code Minimum Slope Check
Per IPC 704.1 / UPC 708.1: pipes 2-1/2 inches and smaller need at least 1/4 inch per foot, pipes 3 through 6 inches need at least 1/8 inch per foot, and pipes 8 inches and larger need at least 1/16 inch per foot. This applies to the Building Drain/Sewer and Horizontal Branch line roles; a Stack has no slope requirement.
Step 3 — DFU Capacity Lookup

Both are direct table lookups, not formulas. Table 710.1(1) is slope-dependent (four tabulated slopes); Table 710.1(2) is a flat number per diameter/role, unaffected by slope. Some diameter/slope/role combinations have no entry at all — the calculator flags those as "not permitted" or "not tabulated" rather than inventing an interpolated number the code doesn't provide.
Step 4 — DFU Load & Utilization
Utilization % = Total DFU Load ÷ Achieved Capacity × 100
Utilization is only computed against the achievedcapacity (the figure your actual slope/design honestly delivers per Step 3), never against a hypothetical capacity your design doesn't reach — if the achieved capacity is null (not achieved), utilization is shown as not applicable rather than a misleading percentage.
